A Personal Connection

For actress Philippa Northeast, the story of My Brilliant Career has been a part of her life since childhood. The 1901 novel by Miles Franklin was first read to her by her mother when Northeast was about 10 years old. In an interview with ABC News, Northeast recalled, "I was [about] 10, and illiterate... way too young to be having this book read to [me]... but what it did establish in me from a young age is this is a really important book to my mum."

Northeast, known for roles in Territory and The Newsreader, plays the lead role of Sybylla in the upcoming Netflix series. Sybylla is a headstrong farm girl in 1900 Australia who dreams of becoming a writer, defying her family's expectations that she marry. The story's enduring appeal, according to Northeast, lies in its portrayal of a woman living on her own terms. "To see a woman living life on her own terms, I think, has been a saving grace for a lot of people," she said. "And that's been more than iconic; it's so incredibly essential, and that was the case with my mum."

When Northeast learned she had landed the role, her mother's reaction was unexpected. "I called mum, because I knew it was special, and she hung up on me immediately," Northeast said. "And then she rang back later to say that she just had to cry in the car and have her own moment with the information I'd given her."

A 'Feminist Rebel Heart'

The series, described as "a celebration of rebellion" with a "feminist rebel heart," expands the original story under the guidance of writer and executive producer Liz Doran. New to this iteration is the character Betty, played by Miah Madden, a young First Nations woman. Associate producer Shari Sebbens commented on Doran's determination to include First Nations representation in the adaptation.

Kate Mulvany plays Augusta, Harry's aunt, who raises him after he is orphaned as a boy. During production, Mulvany relayed messages between Sam Neill and Christopher Chung. Neill, who played Harry Beecham in the 1979 film adaptation starring Judy Davis, died suddenly last month at age 78, prompting an outpouring of tributes. In the Netflix series, Chung takes on the role of Harry Beecham.

Critical and Audience Reception

The six-episode miniseries, which streams on Netflix globally from Thursday, August 13, has received a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, according to Forbes. It currently sits at #5 on Netflix's top 10 list, third when eliminating true crime and WWE shows. Critics have praised Northeast's performance; the Wall Street Journal wrote, "There are many people to credit for this buoyant 'Brilliant Career,' including its developer and co-writer Liz Doran. But it is Philippa Northeast as Sybylla who is the shiny thing from which we cannot avert our eyes." TV Tonight AU echoed the sentiment, calling Northeast "dazzling in a role which once put Judy Davis on the map."

While critics have been uniformly positive, audience scores tell a different story. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 55%, while IMDb gives the series a 6.9/10. Forbes noted the disparity, describing how audiences "have separated themselves from critics quite dramatically."

The cast also includes Genevieve O'Reilly, known to many for her role as Mon Mothma in Andor. The series is produced by a largely Australian team, with Northeast expressing hope that the story's themes of defiance and independence resonate with viewers. "It will bust your heart open," she said.
