A satellite in place

The Meteosat Third Generation Imager-2 satellite (MTG-I2) has been encapsulated inside the Ariane 6 fairing and is in place on its launch pad at Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana, according to the European Space Agency (ESA). The encapsulation was performed with the two halves of the fairing already fixed together, and the upper segment was then hoisted on top of the rocket, which stands vertically on the launch pad inside the Mobile Gantry. All is now in place for launch, and the Mobile Gantry will be rolled away before liftoff.

MTG-I2 is scheduled to lift off on Thursday evening, 27 August, from Europe's Spaceport. The launch window opens at 4:10 p.m. EDT (2010 GMT; 5:10 p.m. local time in Kourou) and lasts 2.5 hours, as reported by Space. Space also details that the satellite will be released into geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) 36 minutes after liftoff.

The satellite and its mission

The 8,400-pound (3,800 kilograms) MTG-I2 is the second imaging satellite in the Meteosat Third Generation network, as reported by Space. It will complete the three-spacecraft network in geostationary orbit, which lies 22,236 miles (35,786 kilometers) above Earth. Its companions, MTG-I1 and MTS-S1, launched in December 2022 and July 2025, respectively. MTG-I1 is an imaging craft, while MTS-S1 is a "sounder" that uses an infrared instrument to probe different layers of Earth's atmosphere.

The MTG satellites are operated by the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), an international group based in Germany, according to both ESA and Space. ESA notes that EUMETSAT operates the satellites after commissioning is complete and disseminates the scientific data. The satellites were developed by ESA and built by a consortium led by Thales Alenia Space, with main partners OHB System in Germany and Leonardo in Italy, as stated by ESA.

MTG-I2 will complete the first family of MTG satellites, delivering data for weather forecasting over Europe and northern Africa with "unprecedented" quality, quantity and frequency, according to ESA. It will provide high-resolution images of the atmosphere over Europe and northern Africa every 2.5 minutes. With the benefit of earlier warnings, emergency services, authorities and citizens will be better prepared for severe thunderstorms and heavy rain.

The ability to track and predict extreme weather with more accuracy and within shorter timeframes means Europe will be able to protect many of its key economies that are dependent on weather conditions, including agriculture, transport, insurance and tourism, as well as infrastructure and energy networks.

Arianespace, the launch service provider for the mission, described the MTG system in its press kit as "part of a new generation of geostationary satellites providing imagery for the early detection of fast-developing severe storms, weather forecasting and climate monitoring," as quoted by Space. Arianespace also described MTG as "the most complex and innovative meteorological geostationary system ever built," adding that the data gathered will have a wide range of uses, from enabling aircraft to avoid storms and providing earlier alerts of flooding to more precise monitoring of fires and fog.

The Ariane 6 rocket

This will be the ninth launch of Europe's heavy-lift rocket Ariane 6, as reported by both ESA and Space. For this launch, Ariane 6 will be configured with two P120C-based solid-propellant rocket motors to lift off and launch MTG-I2 to a geostationary transfer orbit. This will be the first Ariane 6 mission to that destination and the farthest the rocket has flown so far, according to ESA.

ESA manages the Ariane 6 development programme. Arianespace was the launch service provider for the mission, designated flight VA270. Space also notes that Ariane 6 can deliver up to 12.7 tons (11.5 metric tons) to geostationary transfer orbit in its most powerful configuration, and the upcoming launch will test the rocket's capabilities with a heavier payload.

The launch will be streamed live, with coverage beginning about 25 minutes before liftoff, as reported by Space. Both ESA and Space, which is providing live coverage courtesy of Arianespace, will host the broadcast.

Launch status and next steps

All systems are reported ready for the launch, and the countdown is set to proceed later today. The exact timing of the launch will depend on the window and weather conditions. Once in orbit, MTG-I2 will join its companions to complete the geostationary network, providing enhanced weather monitoring for Europe and Africa.

The successful deployment of MTG-I2 will mark a significant step for Europe's meteorological capabilities and its independent access to space, as the Ariane 6 continues its operational career.
