Robbery and Delayed FIR
A loco pilot with Indian Railways was robbed by motorcycle-borne assailants near Bharat Nagar Chowk late on July 24. The police registered a case against unidentified suspects nearly a month later, after the victim and his association pressed for action.
The victim, Vijay Singh Yadav, 51, a resident of Ram Gali, B Extension, works as a loco pilot and mostly drives mail trains. According to his complaint, he was returning home on foot from the railway station after duty on the intervening night of July 23 and 24 when the incident occurred. Hindustan Times reported that five unidentified men on two motorcycles surrounded him near a hotel close to Bharat Nagar Chowk at around 2.30 am. The Tribune, however, reported that three or four motorcycle-borne assailants were involved and that the incident took place near Gulmohar Hotel.
The suspects were armed. The Tribune quoted Yadav as saying that they grabbed him by the head and pointed sharp weapons at him before snatching his bag and fleeing.
Items Stolen
The bag contained a mobile phone, a wallet with about ₹1,500 in cash, an Aadhaar card, a PAN card and an ID card. It also contained official railway equipment and documents, including a walkie-talkie set, a flashlight, red and green flags, an induction book, a competency book, a working timetable, a travel-suiting book, a driver memo book and clothes, according to Hindustan Times. The Tribune's account did not list the railway documents but said the bag also contained keys of a government vehicle.
Delay and Police Response
Yadav said he submitted a written complaint at the Division number 5 police station on July 24 itself, but the case was registered only after a delay of nearly one month. The Tribune reported that members of the All India Loco Running Staff Association said Yadav had been visiting the police station for nearly a month, and that the FIR was filed only after they threatened to stage a protest. The police have not commented on the association's claim.
Assistant sub-inspector Karnail Singh, however, said the action was taken only after a thorough investigation. A case under Sections 304(2) (snatching) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against unidentified accused. No arrests have been made so far.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects. ASI Singh told Hindustan Times that the police were reviewing the footage, and The Tribune quoted officials as saying that after identification of the suspects, action would be taken against them.
