NFC North Teams Debut New Rivalry Uniforms
The Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions have unveiled their entries in the NFL's second season of rivalry uniforms, with both teams set to wear the new designs in their two meetings later this year.
The Vikings revealed their uniform on social media at 9 a.m. CST, featuring starters Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Andrew Van Ginkel, Aaron Jones Sr., and Blake Cashman in the promotional video. The design leans heavily into the team's Nordic heritage, with a deep purple base that appears darker than traditional colors, ivory accents, rich gold, and carved-style numbers. The shoulders carry a Viking knot pattern that nods to history without looking forced, according to one report. References to the Nordic theme and the classic horned helmet tie the look together.
The Lions, meanwhile, unveiled their new white uniform on Tuesday, Aug. 25, as part of the NFL's rivalry program. The jersey features Honolulu blue and black stripes on the shoulder of the jersey and leg of the pant, black italicized numbers in a blue outline, and "Detroit" in blue lettering above the number on the front. The inside collar carries the inscription "Defend the den."
The NFL introduced its first rivalry uniforms last year with teams from the AFC East and NFC West. This year, NFC North and AFC South teams are wearing the jerseys. After teams debut their rivalry uniform, the jerseys remain in their lineup for three years.
The new jerseys go on sale Sept. 1 at Nike.com, NFLShop.com, and locally.
Schedule and Game Context
The Lions will wear their new rivalry uniforms when they host the Vikings on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. The Vikings will wear theirs when the Lions come to town for a primetime matchup on Dec. 20 at 8:20 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday Night Football.
The Dec. 20 game carries extra edge given the long history between the clubs. Last year against the Lions, the Vikings wore their "Winter Warrior" jerseys in a Christmas Day victory, and the Vikings swept the Lions last season.
Behind the Vikings' Rollout
The Vikings' rollout was led by the team itself rather than a typical Nike-led campaign, according to one report. Teaser videos over the past few weeks showed glimpses of shadowy fabric, helmet edges, and flashes of dark purple, building anticipation and speculation about the Nordic direction.
Social media conversation spiked when Lids released a mini helmet with a matte finish and Nordic detailing. Photos of the helmet spread quickly, with fans debating whether a glossy or matte finish would look better on the full-size helmet. Some called the new uniform the best alternate the franchise has done in years, while others expressed approval with fire emojis.
Lions' Perspective
Outgoing Lions president Rod Wood said this spring that the uniform would be similar in color scheme to the current uniforms but with a new twist.
"They're very cool," Wood said at the time. "Different but within kind of the realm of our current uniform pallet. … I think the fans are going to like it and it's different but kind of a cool factor."
