Hands-Free Navigation Comes to Ray-Ban Meta

Meta has released a new firmware update for its smart glasses, version 128, focused on expanding hands-free utility. The update introduces voice-activated turn-by-turn walking directions for the Ray-Ban Meta model, allowing users to start navigation on the go with voice commands such as 'Hey Meta, navigate to Times Square,' as reported by Digital Trends and Gizmodo.

Previously, launching navigation on the standard non-display models required pulling out a phone, starting a maps app, and streaming audio instructions over Bluetooth—or using a phone assistant like Siri or Google Assistant, according to both outlets. Voice-activated navigation had been available only on Meta's more premium Ray-Ban Display smart glasses, which already supported walking directions in select cities.

With version 128, the display-less Ray-Ban Meta now supports walking directions, available in the , Puerto Rico, Canada, and select international cities, as stated by both Digital Trends and Gizmodo.

Spatial Audio and Additional Features

Alongside navigation, Meta has added an optional spatial audio toggle to the companion app. The feature uses AI to convert standard stereo audio into a three-dimensional audio environment, giving music, podcasts, and navigation prompts more acoustic depth, according to Digital Trends. Gizmodo similarly describes spatial audio as using AI to add a sense of 3D space to existing stereo sound. Users can enable it by going to settings, selecting audio, and toggling spatial audio on, as noted by Digital Trends.

Firmware version 128 also expands language support, adding Mandarin Chinese for voice controls, calling, messaging, media playback, and Meta AI interactions, as reported by Digital Trends. Additionally, the update improves Meta's anti-tampering measures to detect and prevent camera modifications, according to the same outlet.

Outlook

The update addresses two key use cases for smart glasses—navigation and audio—making the device a more self-sufficient companion for hands-free tasks. While the full impact of spatial audio remains to be heard in practice, the firmware update represents a notable expansion of the Ray-Ban Meta's capabilities.
