The Met Office has forecast heavy rain for parts of the UK on Tuesday, with 14 counties in Scotland expected to face the heaviest downpours. While much of England and Wales will remain dry with temperatures up to 23C in southern and eastern areas, northern and central Scotland could see significant rainfall, according to the Met Office.
Meteorologist Kathryn Chalk said in the Met Office's video forecast: "There will be a bright start across England and Wales into Tuesday, a good deal of blue sky. A few showers around in the west, but across Scotland is where we have a front sinking its way south and eastwards, bringing some heavier spells of rain."
She added: "Northern Ireland will see a few showers, but mixed in with some sunny spells. A similar picture towards the west, with the best of the dry weather towards the far east."
Met Office maps show 14 counties in Scotland face heavy rain on Tuesday: Ross-shire and Cromartyshire, Inverness-shire, Nairnshire, Morayshire, Banffshire, Argyllshire, Perthshire, Stirlingshire, Dunbarton, Renfrewshire, Sutherland, Caithness, Orkney, and West Lothian.
Flood alerts remain in place across England, including for the River Maun in Nottinghamshire and the River Salwarpe in Worcestershire, following weekend downpours. In Birmingham, parts of the city suffered flooding last week, and residents in the Perry Barr and Great Barr neighbourhoods are continuing recovery efforts.
Temperatures reached 24.6C in parts of the southeast of England on Sunday but are expected to fall on Tuesday, with most of the nation seeing 20C, and cooler conditions where the heaviest rain falls. The Met Office's outlook for Tuesday states: "Dry and settled across much of England and Wales, with variable amounts of cloud. Cloudier elsewhere, with a band of rain affecting Scotland, which will sink southwards during the day."
The rain follows showers over the weekend, with more than 32mm falling in Perth and Kinross on Sunday, nearly half the typical rainfall for the whole of August.
BBC Weather's forecast also indicates rain sweeping across Scotland on Tuesday, with "sunny breaks" in the south. It says: "Tomorrow will see variable cloud cover and sunny breaks in the south with a few showers. Cloudier and still breezy for many further north, with showery rain sweeping south across Scotland."
Looking ahead, BBC Weather adds: "Wednesday will be windy with spells of rain, but turning drier in the south later on with sunny spells. Thursday will see sunny spells and the odd shower, but the west may see some patches of rain develop into the evening."
