Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have turned a long-standing personal rumor into their next on-screen collaboration. The upcoming Apple TV series Brothers, an eight-episode comedy premiering Sept. 23, follows the two actors playing fictionalized versions of themselves, with a premise that leans directly into the real-life speculation that they might be biological brothers.
The series, as described by Deadline, sees Harrelson’s character load up his family and head to Austin for an extended stay at McConaughey’s ranch after his daughter’s engagement falls apart. What begins as a healing getaway unravels when Matthew’s character’s mother—played by Holland Taylor—accidentally lets slip a long-buried secret: the two friends might actually be brothers. From there, Woody’s character turns the ranch upside down in pursuit of the truth, while Matthew’s character juggles a potential run for governor of Texas.
The premise, though fictionalized, is grounded in a rumor that has followed the real-life friends for years. Harrelson told Esquire magazine in 2023 that the two haven’t done testing to settle the question, but noted, “There’s a lot of almost insane coincidences. His mom had a relationship with my dad right around the time he was conceived. That seems like a big coincidence.”
The Real-Life Backstory
The rumor’s roots trace back to a revelation from McConaughey’s mother, Kay, who disclosed that she knew Harrelson’s father, Charles, around the time McConaughey was conceived. This disclosure, combined with the pair’s decades-long friendship and physical similarities, has fueled public curiosity about whether the two are related.
According to CinemaBlend, Harrelson has been open to settling the question with a DNA test, but McConaughey has resisted, explaining that a positive result would mean learning that the man he believed was his father was not biologically related. Both actors’ fathers are no longer alive, adding a layer of finality to the unresolved question.
Talk show host Maury Povich, known for his paternity test segments, jokingly offered to help settle the matter, though no formal test has been conducted.
The rumor has been a recurring topic for the pair, who previously collaborated on EDtv, Surfer, Dude, and the first season of True Detective. Harrelson has compared Brothers’ approach to Curb Your Enthusiasm, suggesting the show draws from real-life situations with a comedic twist.

The photo, part of a 2026 TV show calendar release, places the actors side by side, and observers have noted the uncanny similarity in their expressions and features. The series is produced by Paramount Television Studios for Apple TV, with McConaughey and Harrelson serving as executive producers alongside a team that includes Lee Eisenberg, who also serves as showrunner. The ensemble cast includes Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, Noah Carganilla, Highdee Kuan, Oona Yaffe, and Holland Taylor. Trent O’Donnell directs multiple episodes, including the pilot.

Deadline describes the series as a “heartfelt, chaotic, and wildly funny story about friendship, family, fame, and the messy line between myth and reality.” That line is exactly what the show seeks to blur, taking a personal question that has lingered for years and turning it into a comedic exploration of identity, family, and the stories we tell about ourselves.
The show premieres with its first two episodes on Sept. 23, followed by one new episode each week through Nov. 4.
