Mass Effect's Spiritual Successor Exodus Finally Gets a Release Date, and It's Bringing an Octopus Mercenary Along

Exodus Sets April 2027 Release Date

Archetype Entertainment has announced that its debut title, the sci-fi action RPG Exodus, will launch on April 7, 2027 for PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series S and X. The date was revealed during Geoff Keighley's Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, according to both GamesRadar+ and Wccftech. The game, which has been described as a Mass Effect-like RPG, is the first project from the Austin-based studio founded by talent from BioWare and other major developers.

Meet Salt, the Octopus Mercenary

The centerpiece of the new cinematic gameplay trailer is Salt, an Awakened octopus mercenary and bounty hunter who joins the protagonist Jun as a companion. As detailed in the trailer, Salt pilots a specialized combat mech and specializes in long-range sniping, quick evasive maneuvers, and ink-like smokescreens to disorient enemies. According to the studio, she thrives in situations where others can't, and no one has Jun's back quite like she does in the heat of a fight. The trailer also offered a glimpse of her backstory, which GamesRadar+ noted was 'a bit emotional,' and described the pair as two strangers hardened by very different worlds standing back-to-back against a common enemy, protecting 'the one thing worth returning to: home.'

Another companion, Emrys, was also introduced. As reported by both outlets, Emrys is a member of the Deva, an enigmatic Celestial species defined by many consciousnesses, and serves a support role, launching Remnant Orbs that drain and weaken enemies while channeling that stolen power back into Jun as protection.

Wishlist Milestones

Ahead of the launch, Archetype is celebrating anticipation with a wishlist milestone program. Wccftech reports that Exodus has already passed 500K wishlists, unlocking the first tranche of rewards — a Celestial Star Map decoration for the in-game apartment, concept art, and a music track called 'Elegy for a Forgotten World.' GamesRadar+ further notes that future milestones at 1 million and 1.5 million wishlist marks will unlock cosmetic outfits for Jun and companions, respectively, and according to Wccftech, further rewards include a Salt companion story cinematic and more music tracks.

A Studio Built on RPG Pedigree

Archetype Entertainment was established in April 2019 as a division of Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro, with the studio founded by James Ohlen, who spent 22 years at BioWare and worked on big-ticket titles including Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age: Origins, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Ohlen left BioWare in 2018, ran Arcanum Worlds, and then joined Wizards of the Coast in 2019, according to Wccftech. The studio's ranks already received talent such as Chad Robertson and Drew Karpyshyn from BioWare, as well as people who worked at Naughty Dog, 343 Industries, and Blizzard. Chris King, known for his work on Halo 4, serves as director, and author Peter F. Hamilton, who has published The Archimedes Engine (2024) and The Helium Sea (2026), contributes as a creative consultant and writer.

Ohlen stepped down as studio head in late 2025 due to 'massive burnout,' Wccftech reported, though it did not name a successor. Exodus runs on Unreal Engine 5 and uses Time Driving mechanics, mechanics previously covered.

Context and Reception

First revealed at The Game Awards in December 2023 with a trailer introduced by Matthew McConaughey, Exodus has been in development for close to three years. Both outlets noted the title carries its Mass Effect inspiration openly, and the studio’s roster of veteran developers from BioWare and elsewhere has reinforced that expectation among fans. GamesRadar+ said the new trailer left the writer 'more sold on the game,' praising the focus on Salt as a companion, while Wccftech described the game as a 'spiritual successor' to the beloved BioWare franchise, a label fans have 'long [waited for' for some time.

With a fixed release date and a roadmap of rewards, Exodus is headed for a 2027 launch. The game’s largest set of characters — Salt with her mechanical gear, Emrys with her mysterious Orion orbs, and Jun at the center of it all — is likely to keep fans busy until then.
