Manchester City renew interest in Enzo Fernandez
Manchester City are hoping to sign Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, with a new offer expected, according to Gianluigi Longari. City manager Enzo Maresca has reportedly made the Argentine international a priority target as the club looks to bolster its midfield after the departures of Rodri and Tijjani Reijnders, as well as the expected exit of Omar Marmoush to Newcastle.
Fabrizio Romano reports that City are in "daily club to club contact with Enzo's camp," but notes that Chelsea will only sell if they can improve their team. Romano's assessment suggests the situation is far from straightforward, with Chelsea having reportedly set a price of $160 million for the 25-year-old World Cup winner.
Fernandez has been a key player for Chelsea since his record move in the winter of 2023, and he would bring "control, composure and creativity" to City's midfield, according to one report. City can offer Fernandez Champions League football and the chance to compete for major trophies, while Chelsea will not be in the competition this season.
Fan reaction and manager's comments
Fernandez has faced a mixed reception from Chelsea supporters in recent matches. He was booed by sections of the crowd when introduced in the final pre-season fixture against Real Sociedad, and again during the 3-2 win over Fulham on Monday, where he was substituted on in the 65th minute. Some fans even cheered when he was tackled by a Fulham player.
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, when asked about the frosty reception, said: "In football I am not surprised by anything... We will see. I'm not sure what's going to happen in the future."
Chelsea's midfield options and potential replacement
Should Fernandez leave, Chelsea are reportedly considering Real Madrid's Eduardo Camavinga as a replacement. According to talkSPORT, via Madrid Universal, the West London club are actively monitoring the French midfielder, though they will only pursue a deal if Fernandez departs.
Real Madrid are said to be open to selling Camavinga if their valuation is met, but the player, valued at €50m (£42.8m) by Transfermarkt, is reportedly determined to stay at the Bernabeu and prove his worth.
Chelsea currently have a range of midfield options, including Moises Caicedo, Romeo Lavia, Valentin Barco, Dario Essugo, Jordan Henderson, and Reece James, who has been deployed in midfield. However, both Lavia and James have struggled with injuries, which could make a new signing necessary if Fernandez leaves.
Context and outlook
Fernandez was linked with Real Madrid earlier in the window, but the Spanish giants are unlikely to make a move for him. Manchester City are reportedly the most probable destination, with the club able to offer top-level competition and silverware.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are said to be reluctant to sell to a Premier League rival, and the reported asking price is unlikely to drop given the club's previous investment in the player. The situation remains fluid, with City expected to test Chelsea's resolve with a formal bid.
