A shooting outside a popular Birmingham nightlife venue has left a 23-year-old man in hospital and led to three arrests, with police appealing for information as they investigate the incident.
The shooting occurred at the corner of Hack Street and Bromley Street, near the Luna Springs open-air bar in Digbeth, shortly before 11:20pm on Sunday, August 23. Police were called following reports of a disturbance in which a gun was fired. According to investigators, the disorder began inside the venue and then spilled onto the street, where the shooting took place.
The victim suffered gunshot wounds to his leg. He remains under arrest in hospital on suspicion of violent disorder, police said. A 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and possession of a knife, while a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of violent disorder.
Detective Inspector Stacey Follows of West Midlands Police Major Crime Unit said: "We're in the very early stages of the investigation, but have made good progress already. It's believed the disorder started inside the venue and then spilled out into the street, where the shooting happened." She added that there were many people present at the time and that officers are reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses. Bromley Street remains closed with cordons in place.
The incident comes months after Luna Springs had its licence suspended following a stabbing at the venue. Two people were knifed at a Cru2 event on May 9, leading to the licence suspension. The decision was overturned days later, with the venue required to follow strict rules, including ID checks at certain events, search procedures, and body cameras for door staff. In June, West Midlands Police told a city council sub-committee that they "no longer had any concerns" after weeks of monitoring. Luna Springs was approached for comment about the latest shooting.
Police have also charged a man in connection with a separate daylight shooting in Dudley. Adan Naheem, 30, from Dudley, was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and section 18 wounding. That incident occurred on Amblecote Road, Brierley Hill, at around 2pm on Saturday, August 15. Police received reports that two men were stealing alcohol before attempting to attack security. The victim sustained leg injuries that were not life-threatening. Two other men were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and have since been bailed. Naheem was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates Court on August 25.
