Man dies after assault at Liverpool Street station following Notting Hill Carnival

Fatal assault at Liverpool Street station

A 32-year-old man has died in hospital after being seriously assaulted at Liverpool Street Underground station on Sunday night, according to British Transport Police. Emergency services were called to the Central line platform at around 10.51pm following reports of a serious attack, as reported by several outlets yet the reports differ on the exact timing, with one report saying around 10.51pm and another saying around 10.51pm, both consistent with the same time.

The victim, who was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time, was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. He later died on September 1 surrounded by his family, as stated by British Transport Police in an update.

Charge and court proceedings

Jeremiah Maximo, 38, of Barking, had been charged with grievous bodily harm ( GBH) in connection with the incident, as authorized by the Crown Proseciation Service. Following the victim's death, British Transport Police are now seeking to amend the charge on the indictment, with the application hearing to take place at a later court date, as reported by multiple outlets.

Maximo, a British national, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court. Reports vary on the appearance date, with some saying he appeared on September 2 and others saying he is due to appear on Wednesday (September 2).

Police appeal

Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn of British Transport Police said in a statement:

"First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with loved ones of the young man who has sadly died. They are being supported by specially trained officers as our investigation continues."

"The victim was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time of the incident, and we continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police to come forward and assist our investigation."

Blackburn also said: "This is a key step in our investigation, which continues to progress at pace. We know the victim was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time of the incident, and our thoughts remain with him and his family through this difficult time."

Arrests at Carnival

Separately, the Metropolitan Police reported that some 242 arrests took place on Sunday, which is Families Day, and 394 on Monday, which is reserved for adults, as reported by the Evening Standard. Officers made 193 arrests on the approaches to the event, with the remainder taking place within the event footprint. Despite 243 arrests over the weekend by the end of Sunday, the Metropolitan Police said the mood at Carnival had been "overwhelmingly positive and celebratory", as quoted by the same outlet.
