A 24-year-old man has been charged in connection with the reported rape of a 17-year-old girl near Piccadilly Gardens in Manchester city centre.
Abdul Shinwari, of no fixed abode, was charged with two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, non-fatal strangulation and possession with intent to supply, according to the Manchester Evening News. He has been remanded into custody and is due to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday August 25 2026.
The incident was reported to have taken place at around 1:30am on Tuesday July 14, 2026. The Daily Express adds that the incident was reported on Hope Street, near Piccadilly Gardens, and that Greater Manchester Police confirmed specialist safeguarding officers are continuing to support the victim.
Context of Piccadilly Gardens
The Daily Express reports that Piccadilly Gardens has become a notorious spot for low-level crime and anti-social behaviour in recent decades. Manchester City Council has proposed a series of revamps to increase safety and make the space more family-friendly, including brighter lighting and new CCTV cameras.
Interim council leader Garry Bridges was quoted by the Express as saying: "Residents have told us loud and clear what they want from Piccadilly Gardens. They want the area to look better and feel safer and that's exactly what we're going to deliver. There has already been significant investment in the area - including extra police and council resources - with even more on the way."
The court appearance will take place at Manchester Crown Court, where Mr Shinwari will answer the charges brought against him.
