Manchester City have completed the signing of Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea on deadline day, with multiple sources confirming the transfer. The 25-year-old Argentine midfielder joins for a club-record fee reported at £125 million, a figure that matches the British transfer record previously set by Liverpool's signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
Fernandez has signed a five-year contract keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031, with one report noting the deal includes an option for an additional 12 months. The move reunites him with manager Enzo Maresca, who had managed Fernandez during his time at Stamford Bridge and had stayed in touch with the midfielder since leaving Chelsea midway through last season.
A record summer of spending
The Fernandez acquisition caps what several reports describe as an exceptionally expensive summer for Manchester City under new manager Maresca. Prior to Fernandez's arrival, City had paid £116 million for Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest and £85 million for Ayyoub Bouaddi. According to one report, more than £300 million was spent on the three midfielders combined.
These signings come amid significant midfield departures. Rodri left for Barcelona last month, with Anderson reportedly brought in to replace him. Bernardo Silva departed at the end of last season when his contract expired, while Nico Gonzalez and Tijjani Reijnders also left this summer, according to a Manchester Evening News report. The same source noted that Anderson and Bouaddi were the only midfield incomings before Fernandez's arrival.
The club's spending has drawn attention to their defensive record as well. One report noted that City have not kept a clean sheet in any of their opening three games of the new season, and that they were beaten by Arsenal in the Community Shield last month. The same report mentioned that Nathan Ake has been sold to Fenerbahce and John Stones left to join Inter Milan.

Fernandez, who won the 2022 FIFA World Cup and Copa America with Argentina, expressed his excitement about the move. One slight complication for Fernandez is his preferred shirt number: Mateo Kovacic currently wears the number eight shirt that Fernandez uses for club and country, so his first request at the club was reportedly denied.

One of the most notable responses to the transfer came from City striker Erling Haaland. After the club posted a video welcoming Fernandez, Haaland responded with the message: "Good! Now I can go to sleep." The comment was interpreted as a light-hearted reference to his well-documented focus on sleep and recovery, with the Norwegian having previously spoken about the importance of getting sufficient rest.

Maresca, who replaced Pep Guardiola as City manager, had made the Fernandez signing a priority, according to one report. Fernandez had made it clear he wanted to leave Chelsea, and the London club opted to cash in, with City ultimately agreeing to match their terms.
