Malaysian rock drummer dies onstage mid-performance after collapsing over his drum kit

A Malaysian drummer has died onstage at a rock festival after collapsing mid-performance, according to reports from Malay Mail and the New York Post. Raja Azreen Raja Talib, 56, was performing with his band Meditasi at the Teruntum Rock Festival in July when he suddenly collapsed after the second song of a 10-song set.

The band's frontman, Bakaruddin Daud, known as Burn, described rushing to his bandmate's aid. "I rushed towards him, but I could feel that he was gone," Burn told Berita Harian, as reported by both Malay Mail and the New York Post. "I called and patted him, but there was no response. His body was already cold."

Burn said fans in the audience were visibly alarmed as they watched the collapse. He noted that Raja Azreen had appeared cheerful and showed no signs of illness before taking the stage. "He was really happy to meet up with friends. He didn't appear sad or unwell," Burn said, adding that he was "truly shocked and deeply saddened" by the death.

Festival staff rushed Raja Azreen to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead after receiving respiratory assistance.

Raja Azreen's older brother, identified as Raja, confirmed to Berita Harian that the cause of death was reportedly linked to heart complications. He said the drummer had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and had been hospitalised twice in June for heart-related issues.

"He was hospitalized twice; the first stay lasted two to three weeks before he was admitted again," Raja said, according to the New York Post's translation. He suggested that "extreme fatigue" may have taken a toll on his brother's heart, noting that Raja Azreen had gone directly from a BMX competition to the festival.

A Legacy in Malaysian Rock

Meditasi, originally formed in 1983 under the name Metal Wizard before rebranding in 1989, rose to prominence during the golden era of Malaysian rock in the 1990s. The band reunited in 2015 after a hiatus and currently draws more than 46,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
