Russian overnight attack on Ukraine kills four, wounds dozens
A major Russian overnight attack on Ukraine killed four people and injured more than 30 others, as Moscow launched over 660 drones and missiles in a barrage that targeted the city of Dnipro in southeastern Ukraine and hit several other regions, according to Ukrainian officials.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on social media: “Practically all night, the Russians bombed Dnipro and our other cities and communities,” adding that most of the targets were urban infrastructure. The attack on Dnipro was confirmed by regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha, who said two bodies were recovered from a building hit by a Russian strike, with five other people possibly still trapped in the rubble. Another 21 people in the city were wounded, he said. In the northern region of Chernihiv, missile and drone attacks killed two people and wounded seven others, according to the governor there.
Ukraine’s air force said in a statement on Telegram that Russia attacked with 619 drones and 47 missiles, adding that it downed 580 drones and 30 missiles. Zelenskyy said every strike “must remind our partners that the situation needs immediate and firm action, rapid strengthening of our air defences.”
Separate incidents in recent days have also caused casualties. A rare daytime Russian drone attack on Kyiv on April 28, 2026, killed six people, and a major oil refinery in southern Russia was set ablaze, triggering a local state of emergency as thick black smoke billowed over the coastal town of Tuapse. Earlier, on April 14, a Russian missile strike on Dnipro killed at least five civilians and injured over two dozen more, according to Ukrainian officials. Infrastructure Minister Oleksiy Kuleba said on Telegram: “These were civilians who were simply driving down the road in their cars. People who were going about their business, heading home to their families.”
On April 26, Russian strikes across Ukraine killed three people and wounded at least four others, Ukrainian officials said. Moscow has fired hundreds of drones on its neighbour almost nightly since its 2022 invasion, while Ukraine has carried out regular attacks on Russian energy and military targets.
