The upcoming Telugu superhero film Mahakali, part of the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe (PVCU), has reportedly secured Netflix as its streaming partner, according to a 123Telugu report. However, an exact streaming date has not been announced yet. The film is currently targeting a theatrical release during Sankranthi 2027, after which it is expected to make its digital debut on Netflix. Further details about the OTT premiere are likely to be revealed closer to the theatrical run.

The makers are set to unveil the film's first major glimpse on August 24 at 11:34 AM, which is expected to give audiences a better idea of the film's visual world, characters, and scale. A special preview of the glimpse, featuring Akshaye Khanna, was held in Mumbai on Saturday, where the Free Press Journal watched the promo on an IMAX screen.

Cast and Crew

Mahakali is directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru, marking her directorial debut, with Prasanth Varma writing the story as part of his cinematic universe. The film is produced by Riwaz Ramesh Duggal under RKD Studios, with music composed by Smaran Sai.

The cast includes Bhoomi Shetty (also known as Bhoomika Shetty) in the titular role, Akshaye Khanna as Shukracharya, the guru of the Asuras, and Sriya Reddy as the goddess Maa Kaali. The ensemble also features Rohit Saraf, making his Telugu debut, along with Khushbu Sundar, Samuthirakani, Rakesh Bedi, Rajat Kapoor, Nassar, Murali Sharma, and Prudhviraj.

Theme and Visuals

Mahakali is positioned as a female-led superhero story, exploring themes of discrimination, identity, inner strength, and society's treatment of darker skin. The film presents a different interpretation of the Goddess Kali, drawing from mythological narratives.

According to the Free Press Journal, the glimpse showcases Akshaye Khanna's transformation into Shukracharya, with commendable makeup and a fantastic performance. The film is VFX-heavy, and following the success of Hanu-Man (2024), which was compared to Adipurush for its superior visual effects despite a low budget, expectations are high for the VFX in Mahakali.

One of the highlights of the glimpse, as described by the Free Press Journal, is the last scene featuring Maa Kaali feeding her breast milk to a baby, with the actress looking into the camera—a moment that gives goosebumps. The background score is also described as fantastic.

Release Date

While the Free Press Journal reports that Mahakali will hit theaters on January 8, 2027, in multiple languages including Hindi and Telugu, The Economic Times indicates that the exact release date is yet to be announced, with the film targeting a Sankranthi 2027 release. The discrepancy highlights that the date may still be subject to change.
