A viral video showing a Delhi Police head constable and a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) driver allegedly drinking liquor inside a Police Control Room (PCR) vehicle has prompted disciplinary action against both personnel, authorities said.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, shows the two men consuming liquor while inside the PCR vehicle, triggering calls for accountability over their conduct while on duty, as reported by Hindustan Times and The Times of India.
Police Response and Action
Delhi Police said it took cognisance of the clip, conducted an inquiry, and identified the personnel involved. In a statement posted on its official social media handles, the Delhi Police said: "Taking cognizance of the viral video, an enquiry into the alleged incident has already been conducted. The erring staff, including a Delhi Police Head Constable and a DTC driver, have been identified. The Head Constable has been placed under suspension, while the DTC driver has been attached to the Lines. Further departmental action for misconduct is being initiated by DTC."
The statement added: "Delhi Police does not endorse or tolerate any form of misconduct. Appropriate action will be taken against those found responsible," as quoted in reports.
The DTC driver has been attached to the Lines, with the transport corporation initiating further departmental proceedings for alleged misconduct, police said.
The identities of the two personnel were not disclosed in the Delhi Police statement.
Incident Details
A senior police officer, requesting anonymity, said the vehicle, attached to the PCR unit, was moving through north Delhi's Wazirabad with its flashing lights on when a motorist recorded the video, as reported by Hindustan Times. The registration number was clearly visible in the clip, enabling authorities to trace the personnel deployed in the vehicle.
"It was found that a head constable and a DTC driver were involved in the alleged incident. They were allegedly consuming liquor inside the police vehicle. Accordingly, departmental action was taken," the officer said.
Officials said DTC drivers have been engaged to drive police vehicles due to a shortage of drivers in the force.
The video has sparked discussion on the conduct expected from personnel deployed in PCR vehicles, which are used to respond to emergency calls and maintain public safety, with social media users calling for strict action against those seen in the footage.
