Injury Update: Clark Out Indefinitely

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell delivered a sobering update on linebacker Damone Clark during his Tuesday press conference, announcing that Clark is "done indefinitely" due to an injury suffered early in training camp. Campbell noted that the injury occurred "two to three weeks ago" and is "significant enough" to sideline Clark for an extended period. The team has not disclosed specific details about the injury, and Clark has not practiced or participated in preseason games for the past couple of weeks.

Clark, who signed with the Lions in NFL free agency this past offseason, was brought in to serve as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor. He signed a one-year, $1.4 million contract in March and is currently listed as a third-team inside linebacker on the team's unofficial depth chart. Given the severity of the injury, Clark is now considered a candidate to start the season on injured reserve, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Joseph's Personal Issue and Recovery

In the same press conference, Campbell also addressed the status of safety Kerby Joseph, who remains away from the team while dealing with a personal issue. "Nothing new," Campbell said. "He's doing well." Joseph, who has been on the physically unable to perform list since early August, has not practiced this summer due to a degenerative knee condition that limited him to six games in 2025. Campbell said at the start of training camp that it was unlikely Joseph would be ready for the start of the regular season, and no definite timeline has been given for his return.

Joseph took part in intense workouts with trainers at the beginning of camp and expressed optimism about his recovery, but he has not attended practice since early August. Campbell confirmed that Joseph is not currently with the team but said, "He will be, though." Players who open the season on the PUP list must miss at least the first four games. The severity of Joseph's knee issue—described as a degenerative, chronic condition with swelling and cartilage damage—has led him to rely on strength programs and rehabilitation rather than surgery, according to reports.

Additional Injury Concerns

Campbell also noted that safety Thomas Harper is dealing with an ankle injury that could keep him out of the preseason finale against the Indianapolis Colts. The Lions have played two preseason games so far, against the Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders, and their regular season opener is set for September 13. With Brian Branch also on the PUP list, Chuck Clark and Christian Izien are likely to step in at safety for the Lions.
