South Korea's LG Energy Solution Ltd. has begun producing battery cells for energy storage systems (ESS) in the United States, pivoting production lines originally built for electric vehicles (EVs) to address slowing EV demand and capitalize on the growing energy storage market.

The company said Friday that its joint venture with Honda Motor Co., L-H Battery Co., has started mass production of lithium-ion battery cells for ESS at its plant in Jeffersonville, Ohio. The plant was originally designed to manufacture EV battery cells, but LG Energy Solution shifted its strategy to focus on ESS batteries in response to changes in the U.S. regulatory environment for EVs and the strong growth prospects of the energy storage market.

In a separate announcement, the company said it has begun producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells for ESS at its joint venture plant with General Motors Co. in Tennessee, operated by Ultium Cells LLC.
