Keith Caesar, Known as Keith Keith of the Funky 4+1, Dies at 64

Keith Caesar, best known as Keith Keith of the pioneering hip-hop group the Funky 4+1, has died. He was 64.

News 12 The Bronx reported his death and described him as a Bronx hip-hop trailblazer. Caesar and the Funky 4+1 made history as the first hip-hop group to perform on Saturday Night Live, appearing on the Valentine's Day show in 1981 and introduced by Blondie's Debbie Harry.

AllHipHop.com noted that Keith Keith and the Funky 4+1 "helped build something that changed music" in the late 1970s.

Grandmaster Flash was among those paying tribute on social media. In a Facebook post, Flash wrote: "I do this video in sadness because one of our originators from the beginning of the culture Keith Caesar of the Funky 4 has passed away. I'm really speechless at this point. I just recently seen him, and he was OK. The old saying, 'Life is too short.' You gotta love everyday that you can because you never know. Keith Caesar from the Funky 4, rest in peace. You will not be forgotten."

Fans also shared memories on News 12's Facebook post about his death. Tony Santiago commented: "Backhandedly that group created a word that has become common slang in the Philly area, JAWN. Taken from 'That's the Joint.' Rest in peace."

Judah Israel wrote: "I'm 72 years of age, and was a DJ out of Bed-Sty Brooklyn, and this is one of my favorite groups that I rocked on the wheel of steel. RIP my brother."

The cause and date of Caesar's death have not been disclosed.
