US Military Drone Identified in Inter-Korean Border Incident During Joint Training

SEOUL — An unmanned vehicle detected in an inter-Korean border region has been identified as a U.S. military drone participating in a training exercise, according to South Korean military officials. The identification came after a brief military alert was raised in the area near Cheorwon, approximately 70 kilometers north of Seoul.

The detection occurred south of a general outpost in northern Gyeonggi Province, prompting standard operational procedures to be carried out, a Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official told reporters.

"Upon further verification, the unmanned vehicle was identified as a U.S. military drone participating in a training exercise," the official said, in remarks reported by Yonhap.

The drone was subsequently identified as belonging to the U.S. Marine Corps, Yonhap reported. The U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) issued a statement confirming the incident, saying it was one of its aircraft.

"This incident occurred during bilateral training between U.S. Marines and the Republic of Korea Marine Corps' 1st Marine Division," the USFK said. "U.S. Marine Corps personnel are assessing the circumstances surrounding the incident, and continue to coordinate with our Republic of Korea Marine Corps partners and appropriate local authorities."

An alert had been issued earlier in the day over Cheorwon, advising residents in the area to take shelter as the drone's flight was detected. The South Korean military first detected the drone through its surveillance assets but was reportedly initially unable to determine if the aircraft could have originated from North Korea.
