Plum's Season Ends Early
Phoenix Mercury guard Kelsey Plum will miss the rest of the WNBA season due to a left calf injury, according to The Arizona Republic. Plum will also not participate in the upcoming FIBA Women's World Cup in Germany for health reasons, as reported by both The Arizona Republic and Newsweek.
In a post on her Instagram account, Plum wrote: "I did everything I could to be back on the court, but just ran out of time… The decision has been made to shut it down through remainder of the season and focus on getting my body back to 100%."
The 32-year-old has been dealing with the same calf injury throughout the season and was limited to just five games for the Mercury, The Arizona Republic reported.
Trade and Contract Background
Earlier this month, Plum was traded from the Los Angeles Sparks to the Mercury for Monique Akoa Makani, a 2027 first-round pick, and a 2028 second-round pick, Newsweek reported. In April, she signed a one-year, nearly $1 million contract with the Sparks, according to the same report.
Plum previously played for the Las Vegas Aces, whom she helped to back-to-back WNBA titles in 2022-23, Newsweek reported. She is set to become a free agent after the current WNBA season, according to The Arizona Republic.
Team and GM Response
Mercury general manager Nick U'Ren said: "Kelsey is a competitor, and she wants nothing more than to be on the court with her teammates and competing for the Mercury. We know how much it means to her to play, and how much she means to our fans. Ultimately, this was about doing what is best for Kelsey's long-term health and making sure she has the time and support she needs to return to the court at full strength."
Upcoming Schedule
Team USA will begin play in the World Cup on Friday, Sept. 4 against China in the group stage, with the game airing live on TNT at 5:15 m. MST (8:15 ET), The Arizona Republic reported. The Mercury will return to action following the World Cup break, on Thursday, Sept. 17, at the Portland Fire, according to the same report.
