A laptop battery caught fire aboard American Airlines Flight 2398, which was traveling from Atlanta to Dallas on Friday. The flight, an Airbus A321, was carrying approximately 133 people when the incident occurred. Reports indicate that the pilot contacted air traffic control to report a cabin fire in the back of the airplane, stating, "Cabin fire in the back of the airplane," and adding that flight attendants were attempting to extinguish it.
According to the pilot's communication, "about four to five passengers were burned by the laptop," and the device was "contained about mid-aircraft." The cabin filled with smoke, and passengers described the scene as frightening. One passenger, identified as Jessica Irgens, who was seated two rows from the incident, spoke to CBS News about the experience. Another passenger, speaking to ABC News, recalled that the smoke filled the cabin as flight attendants worked to put out the flames, adding, "I thought this is it. It was definitely very scary."

Flight attendants responded quickly, using a thermal containment bag to secure the burning laptop within about five minutes of the incident. The owner of the laptop reportedly placed it in the aisle, and other passengers attempted to help. In line with these risks, the US regulator requires that lithium batteries be stowed in carry-on baggage only, not in checked luggage, to allow for immediate response in the event of a malfunction.
