A Dominant Start with Underlying Concerns
Barcelona opened their 2026/2027 La Liga campaign with a comprehensive 5-0 victory away at Elche on Sunday night, a result that left coach Hansi Flick "delighted" but also raised questions about injuries, squad depth, and the club's ongoing transfer business.
The win was powered by a brace from Raphinha, who also provided an assist, and two goals from Fermin Lopez. New signing Karim Adeyemi scored his first La Liga goal in first-half stoppage time, while Anthony Gordon, another summer arrival, came off the bench to provide two assists. Flick praised the team's performance, saying: "We're delighted with the fantastic start we've made; it gives us confidence. I'm pleased with the 5–0 win and the three points." He also noted concerns about turnovers during the match, adding: "I was concerned about turnovers. We had to control the ball, and in the end, a clean sheet is fantastic, and five goals is great."
Gavi Injury Update
One worrying moment for Barcelona came when Gavi, starting alongside Marc Bernal in midfield, was forced off before half-time with what appeared to be a knee problem. The Spain international was replaced by Pedri, and fans were particularly concerned as Gavi had previously undergone two surgeries on his right knee.
Flick provided a cautious update in his post-match press conference: "We have to wait to see about the blow he received on his right knee. But it seems that he was better [after the match]. We will have a look, an MRI will have to be done." The coach offered no further details on the severity of the injury.
Balde Left Out and Future in Question
Alejandro Balde's absence from the squad list for the Elche match was interpreted by many as a sign that the full-back could be heading for an exit. Flick, however, insisted he was not pushing Balde out, explaining that he sensed something was amiss on the morning of the game.
"No, I'm not asking him to leave," Flick said. "This morning I felt there was something wrong with him. I spoke to him and said: 'At this moment, I have this feeling, and I think it's best for you to clear your mind, sort out your thoughts, and then we'll talk again tomorrow.' And he agreed as well."
Transfer Window Activity and Squad Changes
Flick's comments on Balde came amid broader speculation about the futures of several first-team players. Speaking ahead of the Elche match, Flick addressed the situation of defenders Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde, along with Hector Fort and midfielder Marc Casado, all of whom have been training apart from the main squad.
"It's a club situation," Flick said. "We're making a lot of changes. We have to wait until the end of the transfer window." He added: "It's normal when you decide you want new players: you think about how to make the team stronger. We were clear with these players, and now we have to wait until the end."
Barcelona have already signed Anthony Gordon, Rodrigo Hernandez, Joao Cancelo, and Karim Adeyemi this summer, with Cancelo returning on a permanent deal after a loan spell. Flick hinted that more arrivals could follow before the window closes, saying: "We'll have to talk to Deco. We have to do what's best and it's going to be next week."
The club's most pressing concern remains the striker position. With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres having departed, Barcelona have no specialist central striker in the squad. Fermin Lopez has offered to play as a false number 9, and Hamza Abdelkarim, whose preseason form earned him a first-team place, is the only traditional option. Talks over an improved contract for Abdelkarim are reportedly ongoing.
Adeyemi's Dream Debut
Karim Adeyemi, signed from Borussia Dortmund for a reported base fee of £22 million, was handed a starting berth ahead of the more expensive Anthony Gordon, who had cost £69 million from Newcastle United. Adeyemi justified Flick's faith by scoring a composed goal in first-half stoppage time, finishing from 11 metres after being picked out by Raphinha in transition.
Flick praised the German international's composure: "He had a defender right next to him, the situation was not easy. Karim stayed calm, waited for the right moment and finished it perfectly." He also explained the reasoning behind the signing: "It was about finding the player whose qualities best fit our football. Karim gives us pace, movement, aggression and, most importantly, that composure in front of goal."
Flick drew a comparison with Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona but was not signed permanently. "Marcus gives you incredible pace, power and quality when he gets into space. But Karim brings those qualities while also bringing a different level of composure in front of goal," he said.
Gordon's Impact
Anthony Gordon made his La Liga debut on Sunday night, starting on the bench before replacing Lamine Yamal in the 65th minute. Within minutes, he had assisted Raphinha, and later set up Fermin Lopez with a selfless pass despite being one-on-one with the goalkeeper.
Gordon's cameo earned widespread praise from fans on social media, with one writing: "The unselfishness from Gordon. We've got a gem," and another commenting: "I've said it since the day we signed him, Anthony Gordon is the perfect Hansi Flick player. I wouldn't at all be surprised if he has a Raphinha-esque transformation." Some supporters labelled him "a true Cule" and suggested he is an upgrade on Rashford.
The England international hopes to earn a starting spot in Barcelona's next match, at home to Athletic Club on Thursday.
Looking Ahead
Barcelona's 5-0 victory provides an ideal platform for the season, but Flick's comments suggest the squad is still in flux. The future of Balde and the other players training apart remains unresolved, and the striker search continues, with Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez both reportedly unavailable. Flick's talks with sporting director Deco next week will likely shape the remainder of Barcelona's transfer window.
