Kiren Rijiju Warns Protesters After Video Shows Alleged Indian Flag Desecration in New York

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju issued a stern warning to protesters following the circulation of videos that allegedly show desecration of the Indian national flag during a demonstration outside New York’s Madison Square Garden. The protest coincided with an address by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at the venue, as part of the organisation’s centenary-year outreach.

In a post on X, Rijiju said people have the freedom to criticise the RSS, the BJP, or the government, but warned against insulting India or its national flag. “We always said, you have freedom to criticize RSS, BJP or Govt. But don't abuse our nation. Don't insult our flag and my country. It will cost you very dearly,” he wrote, sharing a video of the protest. Hindustan Times reported that Rijiju, who serves as the Union parliamentary affairs minister, took “serious offence” to the footage on Sunday.

The videos, which have been circulating on social media, appear to show a protester with an Indian flag tied around his foot, while another group is seen tearing an Indian tricolour. According to CNBC TV18, the protesters also raised slogans associated with the Khalistan movement and carried banners opposing the Indian government and the RSS. Hindustan Times described the clip as unverified and noted that the individual shown had the flag wrapped around his feet while dancing, as others cheered and took photos. The demonstration occurred as Mohan Bhagwat was in New York to speak at the ‘Universal Oneness Celebration’ held at the Infosys Theatre inside Madison Square Garden. According to a News18 report cited by CNBC TV18, the protest was organised by pro-Khalistan activists associated with Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), an organisation designated as a terrorist group by the Indian government. Bhagwat was invited by American Hindus for Engagement and Dialogue (AHEAD), and his visit was part of a three-country tour covering the US, Canada, and the UK as the RSS marked its centenary, as reported by ANI.

During his address, Bhagwat emphasised the theme of unity and diversity, stating that these concepts are embedded in the DNA of Indians. He remarked that while the word “pluralism” is often associated with America, Bharat (India) is known for “unity in diversity.” He elaborated on the idea of “oneness,” suggesting that despite differences in lifestyles and material needs, an innate bond unites all people. He also said that a Hindu who believes India should have no Muslims isn’t truly a Hindu.

The event itself had already stirred controversy, with opposition from some US-based Hindu organisations and comments from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who described the gathering as “incredibly troubling” and expressed concern over what he termed an “exclusionary vision” in India. The minister’s warning added to the heated discourse surrounding the incident, underscoring the sensitivity of national symbols in the diaspora context.
