Legal Notice Amid Marital Speculation
Bollywood actor and former MP Govinda has issued a public notice warning against the circulation of what he describes as false, defamatory and unverified claims about his personal and family life. The notice, which cautions media organisations, digital platforms, social media users and content creators, also flags concerns over deepfakes and AI-generated content involving the actor. It states that no permission has been granted to create, manipulate or use his voice, photographs, identity or likeness through artificial intelligence or other digital technologies, and that civil claims of up to Rs 100 crore could be pursued against those found responsible. Legal provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act have been cited, and the notice mentions possible court orders involving bank accounts, property restrictions and passport-related action.
The notice follows a period of intense public focus on Govinda's marriage to Sunita Ahuja. The couple, married since 1987, has two children, Tina and Yashvardhan. Sunita had filed for divorce in December 2024 under the Hindu Marriage Act, citing adultery, cruelty and desertion, as per a Hindustan Times report. On August 19, Sunita withdrew the divorce petition at Bandra Family Court, a move confirmed by Govinda's manager, Shashi Sinha. Sinha told India Today, "We don't know what came on to her, but she has decided to withdraw it officially. It's also for the betterment of the kids."
Sunita's Claims and the Reason for Withdrawal
Sunita's decision to withdraw the divorce petition has been linked to her allegation that Govinda planned to marry his co-star Komal Rani Swarnkar, whom he is set to appear alongside in the film 'Roopa.' In a phone conversation with Rakhi Sawant that drew widespread attention, Sunita said she had withdrawn the case "because they were planning to get married." She told Rakhi, "Maine kal divorce case wapas le liya kyunki woh shaadi karne ke plan me the woh log. Since the claims, Sunita has been spotted at Jaipur airport and visiting the Khatu Shyam temple, reportedly on a spiritual visit.Govinda's office has consistently denied the allegations. His manager Shashi Sinha said, "Aaisaa kuch nahi hai aur nahi hoga. Koi second marriage na ho rahi (There's no such thing, and it won't happen. There's no second marriage happening)." Explaining the withdrawal, Sinha added, "She is his wife, and there must be something going on in her mind that she made those claims." He emphasised that Govinda never spoke a single word against Sunita in public, while she has been "washing dirty linen out."
Escalation and Legal Warnings
The situation intensified after Govinda was see with Komal Rani Swarnkar at Mumbai airport, leading Sunita to comment on their public appearances. She referred to Govinda as Komal's "sugar daddy," questioned the age difference and the type of relationship, and in a video remark said, "Picture banna bhi toh chahiye. ...K Tumhara sugar daddy itna ameer hai, kapde toh dhang ke pehno... Very bad, he's lost his mind." Govinda responded with a video warning to Sunita, asking her to stay within her limits and accusing her of interfering in his work and damaging his public image.
The legal notice was described in some reports as a reaction to the ongoing public row, with many commentators referencing the Covid-induced break in their careers. The actor's team has pointed to past experiences and expressed concern that the reports are part of a deliberate attempt to damage his reputation and cause mental and social distress.
Kashmera Shah's Post and Family Support
Adding a new dimension to the controversy, actor and Govinda's niece-in-law, Kashmera Shah, shared a post on her personal social media profile that appeared to reflect on her feelings about true love and infidelity. In her post, she wrote about being disillusioned by "marriages breaking and people cheating," and asked whether such a person, referring to loyalty, exists. Shah, who is married to Govinda's nephew Krushna Abhishek, did not directly mention the couple, but her statements drew viewers given the ongoing conflict.
Kashmera had earlier made it clear that she stands with the women in her family, saying "Main itna jaanti hoon ki woh meri family hai, main apni family ko protect hoothi hoon... I am with Sunita." She added that if Sunita, who had not spoken out before, was speaking out now, something must be wrong
Her husband Krushna Abhishek has declined to comment on the controversy, requesting the media asked for "fun questions" and not to ask about his uncle. However, he signalled support for cousin Yashvardhan's film debut.
Fairness Debate
Amid the ongoing back-and-forth, reports on social media claimed that Govinda and Sunita had unfollowed each other on Instagram. Some reports and a fact-check indicated that this was not true, with others clarifying they were still following each other, while a separate report suggested that Sunita had unfollowed Govinda while he continued to follow her. Neither Govinda nor his team have separately commented on the authenticity of these claims, and the contradiction means that the claim should not be taken as established. Inviting a part of the ongoing speculation, a resurfaced interview with Gov had surfaced, in which he stated that his kundli indicated a "second marriage." His comments were, whose effects, now being re examined as part of the current situation.
