Japanese delegation visits Sarnath to strengthen cultural and economic ties with Uttar Pradesh
A 75-member Japanese delegation led by Kotaro Nagasaki, Governor of Yamanashi Prefecture, visited Sarnath on Saturday, where members described the experience as "a very special experience," according to Yumi Sai, a delegation member. The visit, which followed Sarnath's recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, included stops at the Dhamek and Chaukhandi Stupas, sites associated with Gautama Buddha's first sermon. Governor Nagasaki's wife was also part of the delegation.
Sarnath's UNESCO designation has strengthened Uttar Pradesh's Buddhist tourism profile globally, said Jaiveer Singh, Uttar Pradesh's Tourism and Culture Minister. He added that the delegation's arrival is an opportunity to strengthen centuries-old Buddhist and cultural ties between India and Japan and to introduce more Japanese tourists to Uttar Pradesh's heritage.
The delegation's visit to Sarnath was part of a broader two-day trip to Varanasi focused on exploring investment opportunities in Uttar Pradesh and boosting tourism and cultural exchanges, as reported by The Times of India. The delegation includes senior officials and CEOs of leading Japanese companies.
Investment and cultural program in Varanasi
Upon arriving at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, the delegation made its first stop at Asha Mahavidyalaya, where they were welcomed by Awadhesh Singh, the Bharatiya Janata Party MLA from the Pindra Assembly constituency. The group later toured Sarnath, witnessed the Ganga aarti, and experienced the art and culture of Kashi. They were accompanied by Minister Jaiveer Singh.
In the evening, a dinner at the Taj Hotel introduced the delegation to Indian culture, art, and handicrafts. On Sunday, a segment of the delegation is scheduled to pay homage at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple, while others will depart.
Uttar Pradesh is actively courting foreign investment, with a focus on infrastructure, law and order, investor-friendly policies, and single-window clearance, according to The Times of India. The Japanese contingent is expected to explore collaboration opportunities in sectors including hydrogen and clean energy, semiconductors, electronics, automobiles, infrastructure, tourism, and human resource development.
To showcase local heritage, stalls displaying One District One Product and Geographical Indication wares—such as Gulabi Meenakari, soft stone carvings, wooden lacquerware, and Banarasi silk sarees—were set up. Cultural performances, including Kathak recitals, folk dances, and instrumental renditions, were also planned for the guests.
Significance of Sarnath's UNESCO status
The Tribune reported that Sarnath's inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List made it the 45th World Heritage Site in India and the fourth in Uttar Pradesh. This recognition has given the state's Buddhist circuit a new identity on the global tourism map, and it is believed that tourist interest from countries like Japan will increase.
During the visit, delegation members were briefed about Sarnath's history, its museum, and the religious and historical significance of the Buddha Stupa, according to The Tribune. The site, where Gautama Buddha is believed to have delivered his first sermon, holds deep spiritual importance for Buddhists worldwide.
