Bob Iger and Josh Kushner have agreed to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers for a record 5 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter. The deal, first reported on Wednesday, would mark the highest valuation ever for a North American sports franchise.
Billionaire Mark Walter, who purchased a majority stake in the Lakers last year in a deal valuing the team at $10 billion, is selling the franchise. Walter also owns Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers. His financial empire is reportedly facing a federal probe examining links between investments held by his insurers and affiliates.
In a statement, Iger and Kushner said: "As lifelong NBA fans, we are deeply honored for the opportunity to become stewards of the Los Angeles Lakers, one of the most iconic sports franchises in the world. We have immense respect for the leadership and vision of [former Lakers owners] Jerry and Jeanie Buss. Our long-term commitment is to build on that foundation, compete at the highest level, and serve this extraordinary team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles."
The deal requires sign-off from the NBA board of governors and is pending due diligence by Kushner's Thrive Capital, according to a source.
Iger, former CEO of Disney, and Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital, had previously been linked to a potential NBA expansion team in Las Vegas. The Lakers acquisition seemingly ends that effort.
Both buyers are wealthy but not rich enough to personally cover the full purchase price. Forbes estimated Iger's net worth at $690 million in 2019, though his wealth has likely grown since. Kushner was ranked by Forbes last month as the 795th richest person in the world with a net worth of 2 billion. A representative for Thrive Capital said financing will include "outside investment."
The reported sale has not been without controversy, however. Page Six reported that Jeanie Buss's attorneys at Sheppard Mullin sent a letter challenging the accuracy of the report. The letter, as described by Page Six, called the report false and defamatory and stated that any vote by the Buss siblings would be void. The letter specifically disputed the claim that the six Buss siblings voted to sell their 8% stake and that Jeanie Buss is "out" as controlling owner.
The competing accounts from Al Jazeera and Page Six offer differing narratives about the sale's structure and the involvement of the Buss family. While Al Jazeera reports the deal as agreed and pending approval, Page Six frames it as a disputed transaction challenged by Jeanie Buss's legal team.
The Lakers are one of the NBA's most storied franchises, with a roster currently led by Luka Doncic. The team's sale at a 5 billion valuation would shatter records for North American sports franchises, surpassing the previous high set by the Washington Commanders' 05 billion sale in 2023.
Neither Iger nor Kushner responded to requests for comment. The NBA board of governors has not yet voted on the proposed sale.
