Josh Brolin has confirmed that a third installment of the Sicario franchise is moving forward, with production expected to begin soon. In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, while promoting his upcoming film "The Dog Stars," Brolin said the threequel "is happening" and that cameras could start rolling in the near future.

The news brings long-awaited confirmation for a series that began in 2015 with director Denis Villeneuve's original film, which was a box office hit. The sequel, "Sicario: Day of the Soldado," was released in 2018, directed by Stefano Sollima. Brolin starred alongside Emily Blunt and Benicio del Toro in the first film, and returned for the second installment, which also featured Isabela Merced.

The Sicario films are gritty crime action-thrillers set on the brutal, lawless US-Mexico border, featuring federal agents, CIA operatives, and covert fixers who operate in a morally ambiguous world where standard laws do not apply. The first film centered on FBI agent Kate, played by Emily Blunt, who is recruited by a government task force led by the mysterious Alejandro, played by Benicio del Toro. The franchise has surpassed $160 million globally.

While Brolin's confirmation is a significant step forward, there are still key questions about the project's production. It is currently in pre-production, with no exact filming date announced. The project is being developed under the working title "Sicario: Capos." According to reports, production is expected to commence "soon."

The script work was delayed by Hollywood strikes, but producers have since developed what they describe as a "fantastic" story idea.

Brolin is expected to return as Matt Graver, and Benicio del Toro is strongly expected to reprise his role as Alejandro Gillick, a character that producers have previously indicated is essential to continuing the franchise. Fans are also hoping to see Emily Blunt return as Kate Macer, but her involvement has not been officially confirmed.

Taylor Sheridan, who created the original "Sicario" story, remains involved in developing the third film. However, there is still no director officially attached to the project. Denis Villeneuve will not return to direct due to his other commitments, and Stefano Sollima is also not returning, as he is currently working on the second season of "The Monster of Florence." Producers have previously discussed Christopher McQuarrie as a possible replacement, but nothing is official yet.

For now, Brolin's announcement has renewed hope that the series will finally resume after a long wait. As production is expected to begin soon, anticipation continues to build.
