James Blunt pushes back on online speculation

James Blunt has responded to online speculation linking him to a disturbing story from Hayden Panettiere's memoir by sharing an article that debunks the rumor. On Monday, the 52-year-old singer posted a link to a Substack article by journalist Dean Piper on X, accompanied by a wide-eyed emoji. The move is widely seen as Blunt's reaction to the speculation, though he has not directly commented on the allegations himself.

The speculation stems from Panettiere's memoir, 'This Is Me: A Reckoning,' in which she described an incident that occurred when she was 18. She wrote that she was led by someone she trusted into a small room and put in bed next to an undressed, famous man. She later recounted the experience on the 'On Purpose with Jay Shetty' podcast in May, saying she felt 'in danger' and that nobody was empathetic to her situation.

The timeline argument

In his article, titled 'Hayden Panettiere and James Blunt – An Internet Lynching,' Piper argues that the timeline of Blunt's interactions with Panettiere does not match the memoir's account. He noted that Panettiere was 19, nearly 20, in May 2009, when photographs of her with Blunt were taken, whereas the memoir places the incident when she was 18.

Piper also recalled seeing Panettiere and Blunt together at the amfAR charity event in Cannes in 2009, writing that they 'arrived together, had been flirty throughout and had gone to the afterparty together.' They were photographed on a boat together the next day, smiling and having fun. Piper argued that since Panettiere said she fled and hid after the yacht incident, the fact that she and Blunt were seen together multiple times makes it unlikely he was the man. 'It takes nothing to work out that the cabin incident was the first and last time she met the man,' he wrote.

Context of Panettiere's death

The renewed attention comes in the wake of Panettiere's death. She was found unresponsive at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16, and was pronounced dead at age 36. Authorities have said there were no signs of trauma, and the cause and manner of death remain under investigation. Her death has also prompted scrutiny of her relationship with Brian Hickerson, who was reported to be staying with her at the time and has spoken about her death through his lawyer.
