Grealish Returns to Everton on Loan
Everton have agreed a season-long loan deal with Manchester City for Jack Grealish, with a medical scheduled for Tuesday morning. The 30-year-old England international spent the 2025-26 season on loan at Everton, making 20 appearances and scoring twice with six assists before a foot injury ended his campaign in January. Grealish had been linked with other clubs, including boyhood team Aston Villa, but has chosen to return to work with manager David Moyes on Merseyside.
Grealish said he thrives when he feels valued, explaining his decision to return: "I think I'm at my best at everything in life, not just football, when I feel loved. That's what the manager has given me, what my teammates have given me and especially what the fans have given me." He added that the welcome he received from Everton fans since his first game against Leeds was something he would never forget.
The Loan Agreement
According to reports, Everton will cover approximately 90 per cent of Grealish's wages, reportedly close to £300,000 per week, with no loan fee attached. The deal also includes an option for Everton to sign Grealish permanently for £50 million next summer, when his Manchester City contract expires. Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in August 2021 for a then-British-record £100 million and won several titles under Pep Guardiola, but has seen his playing time diminish in recent seasons.
The move is the latest chapter in a relationship that began last season, when Grealish flourished under David Moyen before his injury. He returned to action during Manchester City's Community Shield defeat against Arsenal on 16 August and featured in their opening Premier League match this season, a 2-1 win over boyhood club Bournemouth.
Financial and Competitive Detail
Several clubs explored a move for Grealish this summer, including Sunderland, but Everton emerged as the only club willing to meet Manchester City's financial demands, according to reports. Sky Sports reported Sundered had considered both loan and permanent approaches, with their Europa League participation seen as a potential advantage. However, familiarity proved more persuasive, with Grealish already understanding Moyes' system and knowing the dressing room.
The loan deal follows a string of deadline-day moves at Goodison Park. Everton also agreed a £40 million deal with Monaco for striker former Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun, though the transfer was thrown into doubt after an issue with the United States international's medical on deadline day. The club are still hoping to complete the signing before the 23:00 BST window closing deadline.
Other Transfer Activity
In other business, Everton completed the £3 million signing of midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon. The club had earlier looked at Manchester United's Jacques and Tammy Abraham of Aston Villa, but could not persuade either to join. Beto completed a permanent move to Italian club one direction earlier in the window, opening the door for new attackers. Scotland right-back Nathan Patterson finished a permanent transfer to the Turin club, while midfielder Iiman Ndiaye is reportedly headed to Manchester City in a deal worth up to £65 million.
Grealish's Premier League Player of the Month award for August came during his previous spell at Everton, when he made 20 appearances in total. The club will hope the winger can replicate that form over the current season, and that the transfer offers a fresh start for a player who has faced increased competitive pressure at the Etihad.
