Iran says it received mediator proposals to end fighting with US

Tehran has confirmed that it has been approached through mediators with proposals to end a new bout of fighting with the United States. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei told reporters during a press conference that Tehran had received the proposals, without disclosing their details. He was quoted as saying, "Proposals have been raised through mediators and have been passed over to us."

According to a report from Reuters, a senior Iranian official said on Monday that mediators had passed Iran a proposal to de-escalate the war with the US, which would offer a 10-day ceasefire to find ways to revive an interim deal reached last month. Baghaei confirmed at a press conference on Sunday that mediators had proposed new ideas for a peace process. He said, "The principle of the matter is clear: mediators are working and trying to prevent tension from escalating. While our armed forces are responding with strength and power and destroying the source and origin of American aggression, diplomacy also knows its duties well and spares no effort."

The developments come amid ongoing hostilities between Iran and the United States. Al Jazeera reported that the US has launched a ninth consecutive day of strikes on Iran, and that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and conventional army have continued attacks on US military targets. The same report noted that Iran has carried out its own attacks on Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and other Arab countries, including on civilian infrastructure, claiming to target US forces in these countries.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as reported by Al Jazeera, said that Washington "always remains open to diplomatic solutions." However, he added that Iran's missile and drone strikes, which have killed three American service members over the past week, are an impediment to diplomacy. Rubio also claimed that a "split" has emerged among Iranian officials, with one faction wanting to continue the war against the US and others seeking negotiations.

Baghaei said that diplomatic efforts are coming in lockstep with those of armed forces after recent political divisions between hardliners and more moderate factions. He also urged regional countries not to allow the US military to use their territory to launch or facilitate attacks on Iranian soil in continuation of the US-Israel war on Iran that began on February 28, according to Al Jazeera.
