The United States and Iran exchanged strikes overnight into Monday, marking the first direct confrontation between the two countries in over a month. According to reports from multiple outlets, US forces struck Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island, a base for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the Strait of Hormuz. In response, Iran fired ballistic missiles at US military targets in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the strikes, stating that US forces "took limited, precise action against IRGC minelaying forces posing an imminent threat in the Strait of Hormuz." The US action was described as retaliation for Iranian attacks on commercial shipping in the waterway and a recent attack on US troops stationed in the region.
Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned the US attacks on Larak Island, calling the strikes on US bases "in accordance with the inherent right of legitimate defense." The ministry's statement came as Iranian state media reported explosions near the island and in the eastern area of Bandar Abbas.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Iran was "not looking for war" but would "never sit still" either. He added that Iran "will give a decisive response to the aggressors" if attacked. The IRGC claimed it had fired ballistic missiles at American positions in Jordan, causing "heavy damage" to King Hussein base and Al-Azraq base. The Jordanian army said it intercepted eight missiles.
The IRGC also claimed that a "rogue supertanker" had struck two naval mines in the southern Strait of Hormuz, warning ships to comply with its rules of passage. CENTCOM also reported that, as of August 30, US forces had redirected 83 commercial vessels, disabled 3, and boarded 2 to enforce a blockade. US Navy Captain Tim Hawkins said that "Earlier today, US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island."

The UAE Air Force responded to a drone detected over its territorial waters, approaching from Iran, according to the UAE Defense Ministry. The ministry said reports of a drone targeting Al Minh Air Base were false.
US President Trump, quoted by Fox News, said "We're going to hit them hard, there will be a response" to Iran's missile launches. According to the same report, all of Iran's missiles were intercepted except one, which was allowed to pass because it was identified as not going to hit "anything significant."
