One person has died following a house fire in Henderson, Auckland, on Saturday night.

Emergency services were called to a home on Forest Hill Road at approximately 40pm. Fire crews from Henderson, Glen Eden, Te Atatū, Auckland City, Titirangi, Ōtara, Avondale and Mount Roskill responded, with up to 35 firefighters involved at the peak of the incident. Six fire trucks, one command unit and one hazardous materials unit were dispatched to the scene.

Shift manager Garreth Lewis of Fire and Emergency NZ said the house was "totally ablaze" when crews arrived. He said firefighters were searching for the person while battling the fire. The blaze was contained just before 10pm.

Acting Detective Senior Sergeant James Kim said in a statement that a scene guard was placed on the property overnight. "Police will be carrying out a scene examination at the house today, including working with fire investigators," he said. He added that the cause of the fire "remains unexplained at this early stage."

Kim also noted that members of the community may see an increased police presence while the investigation is underway. Three fire investigators remain on the scene as part of the ongoing inquiry.
