Jaissle's blunt response

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has made it clear that Manchester United have no chance of signing Lewis Hall this summer. In a pitchside interview with Viaplay after Sunday's 2-2 draw with Liverpool, Jaissle was asked by Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel about the club's interest in the 21-year-old left-back. Jaissle responded with a laugh, "No chance! No chance!" – a reply that multiple outlets, including the Evening Chronicle, Daily Express, and Manchester Evening News, reported as a firm rejection of any transfer talk.

The exchange came after Schmeichel, working as a pundit for the Nordic broadcaster, told Jaissle: "We're [Manchester United] looking at your left-back." Jaissle's response, while delivered with a smile, underscored Newcastle's determination to keep one of their key players, especially after a summer that has already seen Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon depart St James' Park.

Jaissle, who arrived this summer to replace Eddie Howe, acknowledged the club's need for new signings, saying, "I think it will be a stressful period for the sporting director. We have some needs, definitely." He also hinted at potential outgoings, adding, "If we are bringing players in, maybe also we are bringing some players out." However, when it came to Hall, the message was unequivocal.

Hall's performance and Newcastle's position

Hall played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool and impressed before giving away a stoppage-time penalty for a foul on Victor Munoz. Dominik Szoboszlai converted the spot-kick to earn Liverpool a 2-2 draw. Despite the late error, Hall's display was described by FourFourTwo as a "timely shop window display," with the defender having been omitted from Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup squad.

Newcastle's resolve to keep Hall is strong. The Evening Chronicle reported that the club would not even consider an approach for the 21-year-old, who is seen as a cornerstone of Jaissle's young squad. The Sun added that Jaissle is willing to make Hall part of a new-look leadership group including Dan Burn, with reports suggesting the defender is set to be offered a new contract.

United's left-back search and potential alternatives

Manchester United's interest in Hall stems from their need to provide competition for Luke Shaw, who is now 31 and started in Saturday's 2-0 defeat to newly-promoted Hull City. That result highlighted defensive frailties, and United are reported to be exploring several alternatives.

According to teamtalk.com, Hall remains United's top target, but any deal would require breaking the world transfer record for a left-back – £68m, paid by Bayern Munich for Lucas Hernandez in 2019. A bid in the region of £70m is considered unlikely, with Newcastle's strong stance making the transfer difficult.

Among the alternatives being considered are Racing Santander's Jorge Salinas, Barcelona's Alejandro Balde, RB Leipzig's David Raum, Fulham's Antonee Robinson, and Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert. Balde has been repeatedly mentioned as a potential target, with the Manchester Evening News reporting that he was left out of Barcelona's squad to face Elche on Sunday. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick explained, "I spoke with Alejandro Balde today and said to him that I think you're not here 109%, so it's best that you stay at home and clear your mind. We will talk again tomorrow."

metro.co.uk reported that Barcelona are willing to sell Balde for around £38m, a figure well below what Newcastle would demand for Hall. Another option is Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, with metro.co.uk suggesting United still harbour hope of signing the 19-year-old. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has insisted the academy graduate will remain, and Lewis-Skelly has said he is happy at the club, despite reports that intermediaries offered him to United and Chelsea.

Transfer window deadline and Newcastle's own needs

While United weigh their options, Newcastle have their own transfer priorities. The i Paper reported that the club need new signings before 1 September, with a move for Manchester City's Nico Gonzalez "in play". Newcastle had been hoping for clarity on a £50m deal, and Gonzalez was left on the bench during City's 2-1 win over Bournemouth. Jaissle has not put a number on how many players he wants to bring in, telling Sky Sports, "I would love to answer that with a clear number, but it's depending also if players are leaving as well."

The transfer window closes on September 1 according to the Daily Express, though another report from metro.co.uk cited September 3 as the deadline. Newcastle have already spent over £150m on new signings this summer, including new arrivals Amar Dedic, Sean Steur, and Lukas Hornicek, who all started against Liverpool.

For now, Hall appears set to remain at Newcastle, but the speculation shows no sign of abating as the deadline approaches.
