Arrest and charges
A 40-year-old Indian-origin man has been charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a young woman at a park in Surrey, British Columbia. Jagendar Kurana was arrested on August 12, a day after police issued a public appeal for information, according to the Surrey Police Service (SPS).
The SPS said officers responded to a report of a sexual assault at Bear Creek Park on August 9 at approximately 8:11 p.m. The alleged victim told police that an adult man had groped her before fleeing the scene. She was not physically injured, police said.
The British Columbia Prosecution Service has approved two charges against Kurana under the Criminal Code: one count of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference.
Police investigation
In a release issued on Monday, the SPS said Kurana was scheduled to make his first court appearance that day. Kurana has been remanded in custody and is awaiting a bail hearing, with his next court appearance scheduled for August 17, police said.
The suspect was described as a South Asian male, approximately 5 feet 8 inches tall, wearing a blue toque, black t-shirt, black pants, and black flip flops. Officers conducted extensive patrols of the park and surrounding areas but were unable to locate the suspect at the time.
Police said the investigation into the alleged assault is continuing.
