Certification milestone

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been awarded ISO 55001:2024 certification for its asset management system on Mumbai Metro Line-3, becoming the first metro organisation in India to receive certification to this international standard. The announcement was made on Sunday, with the certification dated August 23.

Anuj Dayal, DMRC's Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications, called the achievement "a milestone in DMRC's journey from conventional maintenance practices towards strategic, risk-based and lifecycle-oriented asset management." He said the certification reflects a shift from simply maintaining assets to managing their performance, risk, cost and long-term value in alignment with organisational objectives, as reported by The Times of India.

What the ISO standard means

ISO 55001:2024 provides a globally recognised framework for managing assets across their entire lifecycle. Its implementation enables organisations to take more informed decisions by balancing asset performance, operational risk and lifecycle costs, thereby enhancing reliability, resource efficiency and long-term sustainability, Dayal added, according to both Lokmat Times and The Times of India.

How DMRC achieved certification

DMRC secured the certification in what was described as record time, through a comprehensive strengthening of its asset management framework, as reported by both outlets. This included enhancing the Strategic Asset Management Plan (SAMP), aligning asset management objectives with organisational priorities, strengthening risk assessment and lifecycle controls, and undertaking extensive training and capacity building of personnel.

Dayal said the system is continuously monitored through Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), audits and management reviews.

Scope of responsibility on Mumbai Metro Line-3

DMRC is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the 33.5-km Mumbai Metro Line-3 corridor, connecting Colaba, Bandra and SEEPZ. Its responsibilities encompass the safe, reliable and efficient management of a wide range of critical assets, including rolling stock, traction, signalling, telecommunications, stations, lifts, escalators, track and civil infrastructure, as stated in the company's press statement cited by both outlets.

Broader significance

Lokmat Times, in its coverage, framed the certification as establishing a new benchmark for structured, scientific and lifecycle-based asset management in India's urban rail sector, and as demonstrating DMRC's capability to provide world-class metro operations and maintenance expertise beyond Delhi-NCR, contributing to the development of globally aligned practices across the country's urban rail network.
