Ian Wright's Criticism
Arsenal legend Ian Wright has voiced his discomfort over the treatment of Gabriel Martinelli, who has been left out of the squad for two consecutive major matches. Speaking on Sky Sports, Wright said, "The way Martinelli is being treated at the moment, it really makes me feel uncomfortable." He added, "I think he's done enough with this team to be treated with a little more respect."
Martinelli was omitted from the matchday squad for Arsenal's Community Shield win over Manchester City and was also left out for their 3-0 Premier League victory over Coventry City on Friday. Wright praised Martinelli's commitment, noting, "He always gives 100 per cent. We're not saying he's the greatest, but he's come up with some big moments for Arsenal in big games, and the way he's being treated at the end here." However, an exact spelling of the player's name varies in reporting—some references spell it as 'Tzotis' while others use 'Tzolis'—which may cause confusion.
The Footballing Context
Martinelli, who joined Arsenal in 2019 from Ituano, has made almost 300 appearances for the club. The Brazilian is in the final year of his contract and has attracted interest from other European sides. The summer signing of Christos Tzotis from Club Brugge for £34 million appears to have pushed Martinelli further down the pecking order. Arsenal's 3-0 win over Coventry City featured goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard. The signing has added extra attacking strength this summer.
Reports suggest Arsenal have set an asking price in the region of £43 million for Martinelli, though this figure has not been universally confirmed and is subject to interpretation. The player's future remains uncertain as the transfer window enters its final weeks.
A Disagreement Among Pundits
Simon Jordan has criticised Wright's comments, questioning the basis of his criticism. On TalkSport, Jordan said, "I don't imagine it's particularly informed. Unless he's across the exact details of Arsenal's behaviour, and the players' perspective, which he may well be if he's indicating it appears that he's well aware of the players' perspective. If so, maybe he'd be better served to perhaps keep his own counsel, because I'm not entirely sure what it's got to do with him. I'm not entirely sure why he would think that Arsenal and Arteta aren't capable of managing their players in an appropriate fashion."
Jordan also referenced Wright's new contract with Sky Sports as a potential factor in his commentary. Wright did not immediately respond publicly to Jordan's remarks.
The debate has not been officially commented on by Arsenal or Mikel Arteta. Martinelli's manager, who has been reported to have spoken directly with the player, has not issued a public statement regarding the matter.
