Hyperliquid Heads Into Largest Token Unlock With HYPE Near Record Highs

Hyperliquid, the layer-1 blockchain and decentralized perpetual futures exchange, is preparing for its largest scheduled token unlock since launch, releasing 14,175,778 HYPE tokens on August 29. At current prices, the batch is valued at roughly 2 billion, according to data tracked by CoinGecko.

The token recently touched an all-time high of 27 on Sunday before pulling back to around 50. Its market capitalization is hovering near 5 billion, per CoinGecko data. The unlock represents about 4% of the total HYPE supply and roughly 7% of the current market cap.

Hyperliquid has followed a fixed monthly release schedule since the token debuted in November 2024, gradually introducing segments of its 1 billion HYPE supply. The August event marks the fourth consecutive month in which tokens are allocated across three groups: insiders, the community, and the Hyper Foundation.

Nearly 47% of this unlock, or about $560 million, is designated for insiders, primarily early investors and contributors. The community will receive 3%, mainly through grants, rewards, and airdrops, while the Hyper Foundation takes the remaining 7%.

The insider tranche is the segment traders watch most closely. Early investors typically hold acquisition prices well below current levels and may choose to lock in profits once tokens become available. That does not guarantee selling pressure, however. Recent unlocks have produced divergent outcomes: after the May release, HYPE fell 1% in the following days; the June unlock coincided with a gain of about 1%; and July saw the token retreat by 7%.

The token's run-up has been fueled by a series of catalysts. President Trump mentioned Hyperliquid during a crypto-focused event at the White House, saying that Mike Selig, the Chairman of the Commodities Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), was working on bringing HYPE into the S. market as a fully compliant cryptocurrency. Hyperliquid also launched the Aligned Quote Assets v2 (AQAv2) framework with Coinbase and Circle to earn yield on reserves backing 7 billion in USD Coin (USDC), using the interest to fund annual buybacks of about $180 million in HYPE tokens — equivalent to about 10% of its current market cap of $18 billion.

Institutional interest has grown, with more investors and public companies, most notably Hyperliquid Strategies, beginning to invest in HYPE. Recent HIP-3 and HIP-4 upgrades expanded ecosystem support for custom prediction markets and tokenized real-world assets (RWA). JPMorgan recently highlighted the protocol's growth while cautioning about increasing competition, and Bitwise had previously called HYPE one of the most undervalued crypto assets.

Looking ahead, the next scheduled unlock of a similar size is set for September 29. While past unlocks have had mixed effects, the combination of a record-high price and a large insider allocation has traders bracing for potential volatility. Analysts suggest HYPE will remain volatile but should hold up better than most other altcoins.
