Arsenal Cruise Past Coventry

Arsenal started their Premier League title defence in emphatic fashion, beating newly promoted Coventry City 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night. Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard capped a commanding performance that underlined their credentials as the team to beat this season.

The victory was built on a first-half surge. Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute, converting a cross from Riccardo Calafiori. New signing Christos Tzolis then made an immediate impact on his league debut, setting up Bukayo Saka for the second goal in the 23rd minute. Captain Martin Odegaard sealed the contest four minutes after the restart, scoring with a scuffed finish past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised his side's display, saying, "It was a great result and there was a lot to like." The win provides an ideal platform as Arsenal attempt to win consecutive top-flight titles for the first time since 1935. The club also unveiled England defender Ezri Konsa, a new signing from Aston Villa, ahead of the match.

Rivals Stumble

While Arsenal impressed, their main challengers faced difficult afternoons on Sunday.

Manchester City, under new manager Enzo Maresca, needed a dramatic late comeback to beat Bournemouth 2-1 at the Etihad. The Cherries took the lead through Marcus Tavernier, and Bournemouth looked set for a famous win until Marc Guehi headed an 84th-minute equaliser. Josko Gvardiol then scored a stoppage-time winner, sparking relief among the home fans. Maresca's decision to introduce France playmaker Rayan Cherki proved decisive, as he set up both late goals. The performance was far from convincing, however, with Neville noting that City's formation left them unbalanced.

Liverpool also left it late, salvaging a 2-2 draw at Newcastle United via a last-minute penalty from Dominik Szoboszlai. The Reds, now managed by Andoni Iraola after Arne Slot's sacking, trailed twice through goals from Anthony Elanga and Joe Willock, with Cody Gakpo providing Liverpool's first equaliser. The draw came at a cost of a disjointed display, and with key players Mohamed Salah, Andrew Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate having departed, there are question marks over their title credentials.

Hull Stun United

The opening weekend's biggest surprise came at the MKM Stadium, where newly promoted Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0. Goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, both from set-pieces, secured Hull's first league win over United in 52 years and their first top-flight match since 2017 ended in triumph.

Luke Shaw described the defeat as "a smack in the face" but vowed to bounce back. Marcus Rashford made his first appearance for United since December 2024 as a substitute, but could not change the outcome. Captain Bruno Fernandes admitted that Hull's intensity and strength at set pieces proved decisive.

Elsewhere, Everton beat Crystal Palace 2-0, Ipswich Town defeated Sunderland 2-0, and Leeds United edged Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Neville's Verdict

Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Gary Neville was unequivocal in his assessment of the title race. "Arsenal should win this league by a street," he said, pointing to the struggles of their rivals. "We've seen Tottenham get beaten, Man United lose, Liverpool nearly lose, Man City scrambling for a win at home... It's played out pretty much how I thought it would do."

Neville suggested that Manchester City and Liverpool are "nowhere near" the standards they previously set. He noted that City's formation with Nico O'Reilly at left-back and Marc Guehi in midfield "didn't look quite right," and that Liverpool's midfield structure leaves them vulnerable to counter-attacks. He also highlighted the need for Liverpool's new signings, Isak and Wirtz, to start delivering. With Arsenal already odds-on with bookmakers, Neville predicted a comfortable title defence for the Gunners.
