Hooker Offers to Fight Nurmagomedov
UFC lightweight Dan Hooker has said he is ready to welcome Usman Nurmagomedov to the Octagon if the undefeated fighter signs with the UFC. Speaking to Submission Radio, Hooker confirmed he would accept a fight against Nurmagomedov, drawing parallels to his past bout with Michael Chandler and his upcoming fight with Salahdine Parnasse.
"It's the same thing as when I fought (Michael) Chandler, it's the same thing with this (Salahdine) Parnasse guy. It'll be the same thing with Usman. No one else will take the fight," Hooker said, as reported by Heavy. "So they call up Dan Hooker, offer him a bit of danger money, and he welcomes these boys to the big leagues."
Nurmagomedov, the cousin of Khabib Nurmagomedov, became a free agent after his PFL contract expired following a knockout win over Archie Colgan at PFL New York in July. He is currently in a 90-day exclusive negotiating window with the PFL, after which he is expected to speak with the UFC before deciding his next move, according to Heavy. Nurmagomedov holds a 22-0 record and is reportedly drawing strong interest from the UFC, as reported by Yardbarker.
Doubts on Topuria Matchup
Hooker dismissed speculation about a potential matchup between Nurmagomedov and featherweight champion Ilia Topuria. He said Topuria would not risk his standing against an unranked newcomer, a claim carried by Yardbarker.
"Who's a better welcoming party? It was the same thing with Chandler; it's the same thing with this Parnasse guy and it will be the same thing with Usman," Hooker said, as quoted by Yardbarker. "No one else will take the fight. People are like, 'Usman's gonna come in and fight Ilia Topuria.' Be serious, you think Ilia Topuria is gonna take the risk of fighting an unranked, non-UFC fighter?"
Hooker, who previously welcomed former Bellator champion Michael Chandler to the UFC in a losing effort, said most ranked lightweights would avoid the risky assignment and positioned himself as the natural choice if the UFC compensates him accordingly.
"None of these other guys in the division want to risk it for the biscuit," he said, as reported by Yardbarker. "So, they call up Dan Hooker; they offer him a bit of danger money and he welcomes these boys to the big leagues."
Hooker's Upcoming Fight at UFC Paris
Hooker is set to face promotional newcomer Salahdine Parnasse in the main event of UFC Paris on Saturday. Parnasse, a former KSW champion, is fighting in his home country of France and comes into the bout on a five-fight winning streak, as reported by Heavy. Hooker enters the fight coming off back-to-back stoppage losses to Benoit Saint Denis and Arman Tsarukyan.
According to Heavy, Hooker is a +425 underdog in the latest betting odds, while Parnasse is a -600 favorite in his UFC debut. Yardbarker listed the fight for September 5.
