Shooting at Indiana Antique Shop Leaves One Dead, Another Injured
A shooting at an antique shop in northwest Indiana Saturday night left a woman dead and her adult daughter injured, with the suspected shooter dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to authorities.
Lake County Sheriff's Department officers were called to Karmic Sunshine, an antique shop in the 2900 block of West 181st Avenue in Hebron, at 7 p.m. Saturday for reports of shots fired, the sheriff's department said. Indiana State Police also assisted with the investigation, which unfolded near the interchange of Interstate 65 and Indiana State Route 2.
Arriving officers discovered a 56-year-old woman who had been shot and killed at the scene, the Chicago Tribune reported, citing a Sunday release from Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. The suspected shooter, identified as a 62-year-old man who was the woman's boyfriend, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
A second victim, a 24-year-old woman who is the daughter of the deceased woman, was shot in the arm as she tried to flee the store, according to the Tribune. She was transported to a Chicago hospital and listed as stable. NBC 5 Chicago also reported the 24-year-old victim was hospitalized and her condition has stabilized.
The husband and young child of the 24-year-old woman were also present during the incident but were not injured, police told the Tribune. Another man and a young child were also inside the store at the time and were not injured, according to NBC 5 Chicago.
Domestic Argument Suspected
Preliminary information indicates the shooting may have started with a domestic argument between the man and his girlfriend that turned physical, according to the Lake County sheriff's release as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Detectives learned that the suspect and the owner of the antiques store were living in a trailer behind the store, the Tribune reported.
The Lake County Coroner's Office is in the process of contacting the family of the suspected shooter and will release his identity and the identity of the deceased female victim at a later time, according to the Tribune.
NBC 5 Chicago did not assign a motive in its reporting, stating only that the shooter died of a self-inflicted wound.
Nearby Businesses Locked Down
Shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday, Indiana State Police troopers and Lake County Sheriff's Department officers responded to a call at Karmic Sunshine, police said. Nearby businesses, including a country music venue, went into lockdown following the shooting, NBC 5 Chicago reported.
At 7:37 p.m., D.W.'s Junction 2-65, a live country music venue located at 2971 E. 181st Place, posted on Facebook dissuading anyone from coming by: "There's an active shooter between here and the truck stops. People have been shot and we are on lockdown," as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Times Now also quoted the bar's social media post, which said, "There was an active shooter between here and the truck stops" and "People have been shot and we are on lockdown."
Around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the venue posted an update confirming that there had been an active shooter Saturday night, thanking the police and staff. "I wanna thank the local state and county police for their fast arrival," the post began, as quoted by the Chicago Tribune.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials have not yet released the identities of those involved, and the investigation is continuing. Times Now noted that authorities had not yet confirmed details of the shooting or the number of people injured and that information remains preliminary.
A local reporter, cited by Times Now, said preliminary information indicated that multiple people may have been shot and that police were securing a large scene near the junction of Routes 2 and 65. Times Now also reported the shooting was reported at about 19:40 local time Saturday.
