Heavy Rain Disrupts Gurugram, Prompting Work-From-Home Advisory
Gurugram witnessed significant waterlogging and traffic disruption on Monday and Tuesday after persistent heavy rainfall inundated several areas. Roads, already battered by earlier rains, were worse off, and vehicles moved at a slow pace, particularly at Subhash Chowk, which saw traffic snarls.
In response to the waterlogging, the Gurugram District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) issued an advisory recommending that corporate offices, government and private schools, and other institutions guide employees and staff to work from home on August 25. The advisory was issued by the District Magistrate-cum-Chairperson of the DDMA, with authorities stating that the measure aimed to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate repair and maintenance work on roads and drains by civic agencies.
The advisory had practical effects: many schools across the city held online classes, while several companies instructed employees to work from home, according to reports from Free Press Journal and Republic World.
Infrastructure Failures: Road Cave-Ins and Stranded Buses
The rains also exposed infrastructure vulnerabilities, with road cave-ins reported at two locations, trapping tyres of heavy vehicles. Along the Delhi-Jaipur highway at IFFCO Chowk, a section of a service lane caved in, creating a large pit. A preliminary investigation revealed a leakage in a Gururgam Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) sewer line washed away the soil beneath the road, causing the collapse. Barricades were installed around the affected stretch, and repair works will be undertaken by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as the service lane is part of the highway.
In Subhash Chowk area, around 70 mm of rainfall over 35 minutes left several major roads and underpasses submerged. Approximately 15 vehicles, including nine school buses, were stranded in waterlogged Subhash Chowk, with over 300 schoolchildren trapped inside for nearly two hours.
Social Media Criticism and Political Reactions
This year's waterlogging also sparked outrage.The situation led to viral videos of inundated thoroughfares and traffic jams on social media. One clip commonly shared showed a young man working on a laptop while sitting on the roof of a cab stranded in a waterlogged street, highlighting the absurdity of the situation.
X users were vocal in their criticism. One user, who claimed to have moved from Delhi to Gurugram 15 years ago, wrote, "Now, it feels like only my PIN code has changed." Another simply said, "Gurugram is a failed city." Marketing consultant Prerna addressed Prime Minister Narendra Modi directly: "PM Modi ji, fire the Gurugram government."
Political figures also joined the chorus. Congress general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala criticized the BJP government, stating, "Rs 1,400 crore spent, zero result" in reference to the city's infrastructure spending.
Actor worth noting, Suhel Seth, sarcastically compared the waterlogging to an art exhibit, writing on X: "The Venice Biennale took place recently, and Chief Minister Nayab Saini has a strong desire for us to have a similar experience. Please think positively. Always view the glass as half-full, not half-empty."
