Closure announced after 14 years
Canteen, a cafe on Catherine Street in Limerick, has closed its doors after 14 years of trading. The owner, Paul, announced the closure over the weekend, stating that Saturday, 29 August 2026, was the cafe's last day of trading.
In a social media post, Paul explained that the decision was not about recent performance but about the longer-term outlook for the business. "It's less about this month or the last quarter and it's more about the next five to seven years of the business and many of the challenges small businesses face; static sales and ever rising costs," he wrote. "These fundamentals I don't see changing in the near future."
Paul described the closure as "not a sad post but a happy one," reflecting on "14 amazing years working with some amazing people and some of Ireland's best small producers." He thanked customers, who he said "started in 2012 as strangers quickly became regulars and now some are very good friends," and added that he would share "some of the highs and lows over the next week or two."
Customer reactions
Following the announcement, customers expressed their sadness in comments on the post. One wrote, "You raised the bar for everyone else here in Limerick," while another said, "Such a pity. This will be a great loss for this part of the city centre."
Other commenters described the cafe as a favourite spot, with one noting "incredible quality food and coffee always, the soundest staff" and another mentioning they were "looking forward to" items like espresso mushrooms and cinnamon lattes. Podcaster Blindboy Boatclub also commented, saying, "So very sorry to hear this. I'm heartbroken."
Other Limerick closures
Canteen's closure comes as another Limerick business, House Limerick, also closed this month. The bar and restaurant, which overlooked the River Shannon, entered receivership in December, according to reports. The closure of House Limerick resulted in 59 employees losing their jobs across full and part-time roles.
