A Life in the Spotlight, Then a Sudden End
Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in television shows like Heroes and Nashville, died at age 36 at a residence in Greenville, South Carolina, as reported by both ABC Australia and Us Weekly. Police said she was found unresponsive in an apartment and pronounced dead at the scene on Sunday. The cause of death has not yet been established, but authorities said there were no signs of foul play.
Her death came just months after the publication of her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, in which she intended to be "brutally honest" about her life, from childhood onward. Her life had been marked by public struggles, including the death of her younger brother Jansen in 2023.
A Life Under the Spotlight
Panettiere began acting as an infant, with her mother, Lesley Vogel, a former soap opera actor, taking her to auditions. She rose to fame in 2006 with her role in Heroes, following early jobs in commercials and soap operas, and a voice role as Princess Dot in the 1998 film A Bug's Life. She told The Independent in May that she was determined to share the darkest parts of her story without fear of judgment.
In her memoir, Panettiere connected the traumatic storylines she portrayed as a child to her adult struggles, writing that she associated "catastrophe with adoration." She recalled how, as a child actor, she received positive attention for "failed, got sick, screamed and cried, killed, grieved, and suffered," and she wondered if she had unconsciously invited trauma because she was "wired" to see it as good for her.
Postpartum Depression and Substance Abuse
Panattiere discussed her postpartum depression after the birth of her daughter Kaya in December 2014, with her then-partner Wladimir Klitschko. She described hemorrhaging and needing surgery and seven blood transfusions. She also said she self-medicated with alcohol to soothe her anxiety and panic attacks.
The actress told Us about the pressure she felt as a child, saying that she had an identity crisis at 12 years old, and she described living with her father Skip and stepmother in Rockland County, New York, and how being there helped her regain her footing.
Her custody of Kaya eventually suffered; after she and Klitschko split in 2018, her daughter began living full-time with her father in Ukraine. Panettiere called the custody a" a difficult period. Her final Instagram post, dated July 27, showed her with "Good times and good friends."
Estrangement
Panettiere had been open about her estrangement in the months before her death, exclusively telling Us Weekly in May 2026, "Unfortunately, we don't have a relationship right now." She added that she was not closing the door, but was being "brutally honest" and that was the truth of it.
Her mother, Lesley Vogel, who managed her daughter's career as a child star, pushed back against those claims. In an interview with Page Six, Vogel alleged her daughter was trying to "sell books" by describing "20 years of trauma," and she claimed that this condition could not be "fixed" despite "continual efforts to support." Panettiere denied in an Entertainment Tonight interview that the allegations were "so false." Vogel also criticized Brian Hickerson, saying he was at the residence when Hayden was found dead and that they had been trying to get rid of him "for quite some time." She said of Hayden, "I just feel that she's with her brother and they're at peace."
Panettiere left behind her daughter, her parents, and her stepmother. The cause of her death remains undetermined.
