Vishal Chaturvedi's devotional drama 'Hanuman Ansh' has become one of the most unexpected box-office success stories of the year. After opening to a paltry Rs 10 lakh on August 7, the film's fortunes reversed dramatically, and it has now crossed Rs 150 crore in India nett collections, according to trade website Sacnilk.
The film, which stars Shobhinaw Satyaa as Neem Karoli Baba, collected Rs 22.75 crore nett on its 31st day — its highest single-day collection since release. This came during its fifth weekend, a period when most films see declining numbers.
An Unusual Box-Office Trajectory
'Hanuman Ansh' had a muted beginning. Its first week fetched only Rs 1.08 crore, and the second week added a mere Rs 40 lakh. However, the film gained momentum in its third week, collecting Rs 10.40 crore, before exploding in its fourth week with Rs 61 crore. The fifth week has been even more remarkable, with the film consistently earning over Rs 10 crore daily.
The film's fifth weekend alone brought in approximately Rs 49 crore, with collections of Rs 10 crore on Friday, Rs 16.50 crore on Saturday, and Rs 22.75 crore on Sunday. This performance has been described by trade analysts as historic for a film so deep into its theatrical run.
A Modest Budget, Extraordinary Returns
Made on a reported budget of around Rs 2 crore, 'Hanuman Ansh' has generated more than 70 times its production cost in India nett collections. The film's screen count has expanded from 250 to 2,000 following the surge, as reported by The Hindu. Hombale Films is handling the overseas distribution, with the film releasing internationally on September 11. Pre-sales across North America have reportedly reached $100,000, according to India Today.
A Story of Devotion
The film, written and directed by Vishal Chaturvedi, chronicles the life of Lakshmi Narayan, a young man in pre-Independence India who, after losing his mother, embarks on a spiritual journey across North India. He eventually transforms into Neem Karoli Baba, the revered saint known for his teachings of love and service. The cast includes Chandan Anand, Purnima Tiwari, Anil Rastogi, Gulshan Pandey, and Bhagvandas, among others.
Industry Recognition
The film's success has drawn praise from several Bollywood personalities. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri congratulated Chaturvedi on X, calling him a "fantastic storyteller" and the film "brilliant." Aditya Dhar, director of 'Dhurandhar', also gave a shout-out to the movie. Given the film's phenomenal run, the makers have confirmed a sequel. The film is based on Chaturvedi's book 'Divine Detour: That Changed My Life' and is planned as the first part of a trilogy, according to India Today.

As 'Hanuman Ansh' enters its sixth week, it continues to hold steady. On Day 35, the film earned Rs 10 crore nett, bringing its India nett collection to Rs 163.13 crore. The film's India gross collection stands at approximately Rs 192.75 crore, according to Sacnilk data reported by The Times of India. With no signs of slowing, the film's theatrical run appears far from over.
