The extended look atGrand Theft Auto VI pulled 31.1 million views on Netflix between its Thursday, August 27, premiere and Sunday, August 30, the cutoff for the platform's weekly rankings, making it the most-watched title of the week, according to Variety's report on Netflix's own data.
The video ranked first on Netflix's English-language films list in 87 of the 93 countries in which the platform monitors content, according to the report. It surpassedThe Whisper Man, a thriller starring Robert De Niro, which received 23.2 million views in the same period.
How Netflix Counts Views
Netflix calculates views as total hours viewed divided by runtime, while YouTube counts each individual play as a view. Because of this difference, direct comparisons between the two platforms' numbers are difficult, as noted by Variety.
Release Strategy and YouTube Performance
Rockstar gave Netflix a six-hour exclusivity period on August 27 before publishing the same content on its own YouTube channel at 9pm EST. On YouTube, the extended look has received more than 17 million views, according to the report.
During the premiere window, Netflix's US mobile audience increased by 35% hourly, a rise that is 50% higher than the platform's 12-week average, the report said. Traffic also went up by 125%, which briefly caused the service to crash.
Take-Two's Perspective
Take-Two's chairman, Strauss Zelnick, downplayed the significance of the premiere within the larger marketing campaign, calling it "just one of the appetisers before the actual marketing begins," as reported.
Game Release
The game is scheduled for release on November 19, exclusively on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, according to the report.
