Govt launches upgraded Dak Sewa and Dak Mitra apps, inaugurates 14 renovated post offices

Union Minister for Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia on Monday launched upgraded versions of the Dak Sewa and Dak Mitra mobile applications and virtually inaugurated 14 renovated post office buildings across the country, according to The Hindu Business Line.

Dak Sewa app brings postal services to doorsteps

The Dak Sewa app enables consumers to avail postal services like speed post, parcel booking, and money order at their doorstep, Scindia said. During the trial phase, the app witnessed over 10 lakh downloads, and the services are available across the country.

"Our customers will be able to book all services of the postal department sitting at their homes or offices, just with one click on the Dak Sewa app. On the basis of this Sewa app, we have already booked 99 lakh parcels," the minister said.

The app is available in 23 Indian languages and enables digital payments through UPI, internet banking, and cards. Online bill payments through SBI ePay, along with domestic and international booking processes, have been made simpler and more integrated.

Dak Mitra app supports postal employees

Scindia also launched the Dak Mitra app, which Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said empowers India Post employees, similar to how Dak Sewa empowers citizens.

Since the launch of the app's earlier avatar in May 2025, the Dak Mitra app has been operational across 1.4 lakh branch post offices. It has facilitated 2.45 crore domestic speed post and parcel bookings and played a significant role in the delivery of 15.09 crore postal articles.

The Dak Mitra initiative has contributed to Rs 1,102 crore in new premium collections and a total premium collection of Rs 5,431 crore.

Transformation strategy for India Post

Pemmasani said customers expect services at their doorstep, businesses want logistics they can rely on, and India Post employees need effective tools to function more efficiently. He acknowledged that India Post gradually became less relevant to a generation of young Indians, who often used other services for parcels and financial needs, but noted that India Post has reach, affordability, and the trust of generations.

He outlined four ways the Department of Posts can transform: technology upgradation, change in policy frameworks, change in organizational culture, and physical infrastructure.

Scindia said the Department of Posts is undergoing a comprehensive transformation driven by technology, policy reforms, organisational change, and modern infrastructure. The initiatives reflect the department's commitment to making postal services easier to access, easier to use, and relevant to every generation of Indians.

Renovated post offices and local inaugurations

Among the 14 renovated post offices, two in Nagpur—at Shankar Nagar and Ayodhya Nagar—were virtually inaugurated by Scindia and Pemmasani. The Shankar Nagar post office was locally inaugurated by Mayor Neeta Thakre, in the presence of NMC standing committee chairperson Shivani Dani-Wakhre and corporator Yogesh Pachpor. The Ayodhya Nagar branch was inaugurated by Nagpur South MLA Mohan Mate, along with Director of Postal Services, Maharashtra circle, Simran Kaur.

Both facilities were revamped under India Post's 'Jan Seva Connect' project, with upgraded infrastructure offering postal, savings bank, and postal life insurance services in a more accessible and customer-friendly environment. The redesigned post offices follow a concept developed by the National School of Planning and Architecture, featuring rounded corners for safety, an information wall, and a more user-friendly, modern layout aimed at improving the visitor experience, according to Simran Kaur.

Sudhir Jakhare, director of postal services for the Nagpur postal region, said the makeover was the result of work carried out over the past six months and aimed at giving India Post a new corporate look and greater professionalism in service delivery.

Broader rollout and services

The Dak Mitra app serves as a unified operational platform for more than 1.4 lakh branch post offices and is being rolled out across the department's 1.3 lakh post offices for booking, bulk and international mail processing, and OTP-based verification. It is deployed on Android-based handheld devices, enabling Branch Postmasters to undertake paperless and real-time postal and financial transactions, including mail booking, OTP-based doorstep delivery, Core Banking Services, insurance services, Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC, cash deposits and withdrawals, and PLI/RPLI premium collection at the doorstep.

The Dak Sewa app offers access to India Post's core and PLI/RPLI services, letting users locate post offices, book services, track items, request pickups, and file grievances, with simpler booking available in 23 regional languages.
