Google on Tuesday, September 1, introduced Google Pics, a new tool that combines image creation and editing for its Workspace and premium users. The offering is built on the company's prior Nano Banana AI and is available both as a standalone product and as part of the Workspace suite, starting with Slides and Docs, with Drive access expected soon, according to a report from Rappler.
The tool is positioned against popular editors such as Photoshop, Canva, and Adobe Express, and lets users create images from written prompts or upload their own images as a starting point for editing, Rappler reported.

Pics gives users control over specific parts of an image, whether the image was AI-generated or not, according to NewsBytes. The tool also allows editing and translating text within an image without altering its design or font, supporting 29 languages at launch.
Object segmentation is among the capabilities highlighted: users can isolate an object and transform it without changing the rest of the image. Google said, "You can input text comments on specific areas to request targeted changes and execute multiple edits at once," as quoted in Rappler's coverage.
The tool supports collaborative editing, letting multiple users work on the same image simultaneously, and generates multiple options based on a prompt, allowing users to choose an AI-generated iteration or start fresh with a different one, Rappler noted.
NewsBytes adds that Pics can upscale images to 2K and 4K resolutions while handling multiple edits at once. The tool is integrated with other Workspace apps; users can access it within Docs and Slides by clicking on an image, and soon will be able to edit images saved in Google Drive.
Background: Nano Banana
Pics is built on Nano Banana, Google's earlier AI image-generation offering. Nano Banana had been incorporated into Google Earth, but that addition was reversed a few days after launch after people noted its potential to create deepfakes of Google Earth images, an unintended use case, Rappler reported.
