Drone Footage Reveals Origin of Himalayan Flash Floods
Drone footage recorded by a Chinese photographer has captured the moment a glacier collapsed near Langtang Lirung peak, triggering the catastrophic flash floods that devastated parts of Nepal and Tibet in late August. The peak rises more than 7,200 meters above sea level, and the flow of ice, rock, mud and debris crashed into the valley about 1,200 meters below, causing the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers to swell, as reported by Moneycontrol. The footage was recorded accidentally, according to the same report.
Devastation and Rescue Efforts
The flash floods on August 26 caused what Moneycontrol described as a catastrophic mudslide across the Himalayas. Nepal's disaster management authorities have reported more than 900 people killed and over 4,000 missing. In Tibet, Chinese authorities reported 16 deaths in Gyirang County and 546 people missing. Rescue operations entered their sixth day on Monday.
Nepal's Prime Minister Balendra Shah called the situation an "unimaginable and heartbreaking natural disaster," and said the floods have made it extremely difficult to assess the full extent of the damage to life, property, and infrastructure.
Combatting Misinformation Online
In the wake of the disaster, Nepalese authorities have moved to counter a wave of misleading content circulating online. The Nepal Press Council has opened a portal titled "Special Complaints on the Bhotekoshi Incident" for the public to report misinformation and inappropriate material, according to The Kathmandu Post. Council Chairman Umesh Shrestha said 72 social media users have been instructed to remove inappropriate content, with complaints lodged against some online news portals and their social media pages as well. The council's portal had received 101 complaints by 5 pm on Saturday.
Fact-checkers have found that several widely circulated videos and images purporting to show the floods were from previous disasters in other countries, recycled from other events, or generated by artificial intelligence. The proliferation of such material prompted the council's intervention.
